If you are careful you can get free e-books to downlaod to any type gadget including an orfinary pc. Some are audio too and some in mp3 format.
Many are the classics so I assume are out of copyright...
this is a start and quite popular...

I sell 2nd hand books on Amazon - but there is a problem with their search facility. If you type in book title and author it will not always show up at all. However, by using very little info in the advanced search page(click on books tab) - instead of normal search, then I find that book I am looking for often does get found. Amazon do not think this is a problem, and despite many sellers complaining that function is not working correctly, come back with the answer - use the ISBN. Thing is though not every book has one or has ever had one! Also if you do find yourself on the product page for the book you want, there may be a box just under title/author details that shows hardback/paperback/massmarket paperback/audio etc it will have little + signs next to those editions. If you click on the + it will show other copies from different publishers etc and they may be better priced etc for your needs. And yes the kindle version if available will be there as well. And some sellers will if asked nicely do deals on multiple book buys when from same seller. Assuming that seller has 2 items or more that someone wants to buy. I do it by offering cheaperst free and just charging for the one book, so long as my postal costs get covered. (Oh and sellers do not get all the postage that you a buyer pays in 2nd hand transactions - we get between £1.46 and £2.32 for a used book sale. Depends on account type.)0

I have a Kindle and I absolutely love it. When they first came out I thought I wouldn't go near them (I too love the feel and smell of paper), but in the end I caved.
It hasn't replaced my library (far from it, that continues to grow rapidly - I just can't seem to stop buying books), it has just added to it. Now if I suddenly remember I need a particular book quickly, or I find offers for cheap/free books on Kindle, I can just buy them and start reading straight away.
I've read novels, plays, short stories and poetry on the Kindle, and I still read physical books. As far as I'm concerned, anything that enables me to pack more books into my little house is a good thing.
Also, 'As I Lay Dying' is great, I'm sure you'll enjoy it

I have bought and sold books on Amazon with no problem. Just be sure to read the seller's feedback first.
I LOVE my Kindle. I have found it has paid for itself because there are so many free and cheap books out there. I got a lot of wonderful books in the last Kindle sale for around £1 each so they will last me for a while. I do find it harder to go back to dead tree books now because I find them so awkward to read in bed and I am now so used to being able to change the font size (I have bad eyesight).0 -
I have bought loads of secondhand books from Amazon and never had a problem.
I can see with your travelling why you are thinking about a kindle and for you it would probably be a good idea. There is no way I will ever have one, I love the smell of books and the look of them on my numerous book shelves all around my house. Oh and the pile on the floor next to my bed, on my bedside cupboard, computer desk (you get the picture!)The world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -

Have brought loads of used books from amazon.
Physical quality of most has been good or better. I am sure that some have actually been new books.
Always said I was anti ebook but have just received a kindle touch, as a surprise present, so my wife can get rid of any more clutter.
Still experimenting but I am sure it will take over to some extent."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

well I have a Kindle and I absolutetly love it,but I still buy books if I see one I want The Ken Follett book my DD bought for me second hand from the online Oxfam shop as I was 64th on the list to borrow it from the library. I think it cost her about three pounds, another reasonable place to buy online seconghand books and not expensive at all Wonderful book, and well worth buying. I also have his 'World Without End'.He is a great writer and I am reading one of his books on my kindle at the moment .I have around 104 books on my kindle that I have downloaded and of those I think I actually have bought around 7 with a voucher that was given to me at Christmas. You have to keep a good look out and often there will be books to down load for free and it changes every week.I still use the libray and my book club book this month that we are reading is Jenna Bailey's 'Can Any Mother Help Me'.I go to my book group about once a month plus I still get libray books and my Kindle is useful to have in my bag when I am in the car waiting for my DGC to come out of school or on the beachI also buy books from my local second-hand bookstore andI can't pass a CS without checking them out for anything I may have missed I bought "The Passage" by Justin Cronin when I was on holiday in April for 50p and it was a great holiday read of over 900 pages I have got my eye out for his follow up book The Twelve

I have bought used books from Amazon, Ebay and Abe books. No problems with anything. I also have a Kindle. Was against it at first being a library assistant for 20 years! OH bought me one for my birthday. I took it on holiday, and now read books at home and carry my Kindle with me in my handbag. Best of both worlds!I Believe in saving money!!!:T

I've got amazon kindle as a free download on my phone, & only have the free books on it - but there are loads, so that's ok. I can't imagine ever only having e books, but they're handy especially for travel :-)0
