Internet through TV

Options
Hi, we do not have internet at home- can not get virgin media cable and would rather not go down the phone line route as do not want to pay line rental for a phone we wouldn't use? Is there any other way of being about to use our 3d Internet enabled Samsung tv? We live in s flat. Only access we currently have to Internet is via our iPhones. We have a laptop, but since moving to the flat we have not used the Internet on it.
Thanks

Noreen

You'd have to connect it using a 3G wireless internet service, if you are not prepared to pay for line rental. Assuming that a reasonably fast service is available at the property-fast enough to stream video.
You might end up spending more on 3G than paying line rental and having a conventional ADSL broadband service.

You can use you iPhone as a wireless modem and connect all computers to it. This can be a temporary solution because 3G is not very fast and pretty expensive.

I think that a phone line & ADSL would prove to be your cheapest method.

If the OP stops thinking of the line rental as associated with voice calls and instead as an enabler for cheap Internet access I wonder if that helps?

Unless they are a very light user I would have thought it would still be cheaper (and a better experience) than using 3G.

I think O2 used to do a line rental only deal without a voice plan, but I don't know that any supplier currently offers such a thing.

Quite agree as Colin said, check out the line rental or even with free calls evenings and weekends less than £10 p/m plus broadband.

Assuming you have a decent connection you would be requiring an unlimited service and not capped or throttled, certainly at peak times. This unfortunately is gonna cost as IPTV uses up bandwidth exactly the same way as downloading stuff.
Most 'unlimited' are not unlimited there are caps, so look for the small print.

Might be better to ask one of your neighbours what exchange they are connected to and then see whats available.

Thanks for your help. But of a techno phobe so will do a bit of googling with the terms you have quoted. Can't use iPhones as with giff gaff and they have a ban on tethering. Do not really know any of the neighbours- but did think to look at wifi to see what came up, and several sky users came up although we can't have cable dishes..

Sky's phone and internet service has nothing to do with their satellite TV service, you don't need one to have the other.
Their broadband service is delivered via a phone line using standard ADSL. No dish required.
Cable is used for VM's services, not for Sky.

  • Which ADSL will be the best option?

Surely the answer is to upgrade there mobile phone package to an unlimited data plan and use tethering either wireless or usb? my samsung galaxy s2 package costs 31 a month i get 2000 any network any time minutes thousands of free 3to3 minutes 5000 texts and unlimited downloads data usage etc and unlimited tethering,

my real term download speeds in reference to torrents is 1.1mb per second.

There is no 'best', it depends what is available on your exchange. Start with an exchange search on https://www.samknows.com for your LLU options.
