30 Sept - Finally got round to sorting out a large larder cupboard this weekend. Found what looks like mildew/mould behind the door frame - you can't see it if you look head on, but I saw some on the old paper I removed. I'm hoping that it's not damp, & just mould that was caused when the decorators sprayed water on the walls to remove the old wallpaper next to it some months ago - there's no water or moistness inside the cupboard, so maybe some water just got through the door hinges, & then couldn't dry out properly because the door's always shut. I don't think water's getting in from the roof - it's rained a lot lately, yet there's very little staining (a few small splashes) & I would have expected it to be wet if that's how it's got there.
Anyway, yesterday I read up on how to get rid of mildew/mould & reduce the chances of it coming back - some sites say use bleach, some say use vinegar, & some say get an anti-fungicidal wash to clean it properly. I didn't have time yesterday, so went to the shops today - it cost me over £25 for the spray, damp seal & anti-fungicidal paint , so I wasn't amused by that. Thank goodness I've been overpaying on the rent & council tax, so I was able to reduce that for this month & use some of the extra that would have gone on that to buy this stuff. Was far too tired today to make a start on it (Sunday shoppers carrying on like Christmas is next week ), so I'll tackle it in the morning - now I've seen it, I don't want to use the cupboard until it's properly sorted out, even though it's been a pain clearing it out.BSC #53 - "Never mistake activity for achievement."

Ohh WDIAG, let me know what works. I've used the bleach thing but it always comes back. I also spent lots of money on various cleaners that say they will remove mould and they don't work.
The best i used was 'domestos 5 times longer' on my shower, but its only recommended that you use it on toilet bowls, so am worried about continuous use of it.The first time we said hello, was the first time we said goodbye. As the angels took your tiny hand and flew you to the sky-you forever left us breathless. RIP my beautiful granddaughter0 -
I had the same problem, when my water tank pipes came undone, (thanks to council workers ) tank emptied all over the dining room floor one night. The water must have gotten under the skirting boards in the airing cupboard as within 18mnths a mouldy patch appeared behind our TV in the living area. I tried bleach , didnt work just kept coming back. In the end I got some sort of paint and painted the area, it seems to have done the trick!:D Just went to have a look but I cant find it( the can), must be in the shed, not dressed yet so not going to venture there! lol....................IF what you have brought doesnt work, let me know and you can have the rest of what I used. I only did it a couple of weeks ago so it will still be fresh in the can too...........anything to save a bit of money eh!0

BLTN, I will do, I promise.
The woman at Homebase also told me to use bleach, but I'm not totally convinced by that, which is why I bought the other stuff to use as well. I've been here nearly two years, & I've only just noticed it because it's in the bit right behind the door frame on both sides. The cupboard is huge but raised above the ground by about two feet, & where this is is therefore about 7-8 feet above the kitchen floor - I have to use a ladder to get to the top two shelves, so I was just going to use those shelves to store my mountain of spare plastic containers that I hardly ever use. If I hadn't decided to strip the cupboard & re-paint it, I'd never have removed the paper the previous people had stuck on it & I wouldn't have seen this stuff at all (that's where meddling gets me
). Even now, it's not that much & for a few minutes I was very tempted to just brush it off, then paint & paper over it, as I'm still not sure it's actually damp & no-one else is going to see it. Trouble is, I've seen it & now it will bug me until it's gone, plus I don't want to get the cupboard sorted out & then have to deal with this again months/years down the line.
SW, many thanks for the offer - I'll let you know on that. I don't understand why the damp doesn't dry out once it's there. After all, it's not getting any wetter, so I'd have expected it to eventually dry out, but it doesn't seem to work that way. Anyway, I'll be attacking it in a few minutes once I've had my breakfast - need to find my face masks as I can do without inhaling the dust.BSC #53 - "Never mistake activity for achievement."

4 October - Found out today that one of the women at work died earlier this week - it was totally unexpected, as she wasn't ill, wasn't overweight & was very fit.
She was only in her fifties, but since her divorce many years ago had devoted an inordinate amount of time to caring for her mother who lived a long way away & who wouldn't accept home care services & expected her daughter to drop everything at a moment's notice to attend to her needs. Now she's outlived her own daughter
I don't know when the funeral is (there's got to be a post-mortem first), but I'd like to be able to go if I can, as she was a nice woman. It's refocused my thoughts & I can't sleep tonight for thinking about it - I'm glad I've got my finances sorted now, & I'm going to concentrate on what I want to do in life rather than making sacrifices that I begrudge or putting up with things I don't feel comfortable with. You can't live for or through other people, & having been so ill, I'd hate to think that years from now the only thing I have to look back on is a list of things I regret not doing or saying.
