Talk Talk breaking the law

I am moving into a flat and there is a phone line. When you plug in and dial 150 to find out the phone number it routes directly through to Talk Talk.

I want this line to go to another provider as I wouldn';t touch Talk Talk with a barge pole so I asked them for the phone number.

Apparently because I am not the account holder, and dont know the number they cannot discuss anything with me.

So i contacted the Landlord who gave me contact details for the previous tenants for the past 4yrs.

Not one of them has ever had broadband or a phone line activated.

So I contacted Talk Talk again and advised them that they have an active line without the tenants permission and they still refuse to tell me the number.

If i wish to take out services with them then they are happy to tell me, but if i wish to use another provider then I will have to pay for an additional phone line - which with Sky is £100

I contacted Ofcom who said they cannot refuse to give me this info being the legal tenant.

In total I have spent over 3hrs on the phone with Talk Talk They refuse to let me speak to a manager and I have also emailed Cdunstone with no response.

I dont know what to do - I am at my wits end - all I want to know is the phone number so that I can select my own provider

Any advice would be appreciated

OR even when you phone your own mobile (adding 141 if it is shown as Withheld)? Ofcom are talking nonsense, the 'legal tenants' has absolutely no relationship with the provider - the DPA stipulates ONLY that person may modify or terminate those arrangements. Until then, you cannot do anything other than get a different line freshly installed.

WHICH 'law' are they breaking, incidentally?

No doubt they pay by DD and won't notice for awhile - so keep a note of your usage in a notebook until the line is released (as if BB is involved there will be a release fee that remains the responsibility of the earlier tenant) so if called upon to reimburse the cost of usage - but NOT line rental - you can play fair and do so.

Your not really understanding. Ofcom have stated that because we have sworn affadavits stating that nobody has requested a line in that property in over 4yrs, i have a right to take that line over with any provider that I wish and Talk Talk have no right to hold it to ransom.

By rights what Talk Talk should be doing is contacting whoever they have down as the account holder and advising them that i wish to take over the line and do they have any objections.

Talk talk however are saying they cannot find out who the account holder is unless i give them the phone number which is !!!!!!!!

Also how can i keep a note of my usage when the line is unusable. The minute you try to dial ANY number it automatically routes through to Talk Talk

If you are fighting with Talk Talk then it's an indication of how dreadful their customer service is and how you should avoid them.

While it will cost you more money in the short term find another provider and get a new line with them.

In the long term it will save you money and further stress dealing with a company that generates lots of complaints.

BTW if you still insist on fighting get in touch with OFCom and ask them how you escalate your complaint as you aren't a customer of Talk Talk so can't use an adjudicator.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)

    Hi amartin1908,

If you tweet us @TalkTalkCare we can look into this for you in more depth. The Routing of all calls to TT usially indicates the line has been barred due to non payment, so all outbound calls route to our Customer Services Team.

In regards to Data Protection it is correct that we can only discuss the details of thea ccount, such as telephone number etc, with the named account holder. This is to ensure security and protection. However, this isnt the only option that can be considered and we are happy to discuss this with you

    Regards

This is strange because I had a similar problem a few years back. A line with debt was already set up when i moved into my rented property. I simply called BT and they told me that I would have to 'take over the line' All in all everything was up and running within 4 weeks!

Since the line is apparently TT LLU'd you can only do a return to donor back to BT-which is free but requires a 12m line rental contract. No need to talk to TT then.
