People who feel the need to work

  • With an attitude like that you'll never find a fulfilling job.
non sequitur. Often its people who have such an attitude who don't take any nonsence and end up doing very worthwhile things. You don't see writers or artists or intellectuals getting excited about how many shoes they can sell and if they can beat their colleagues to be employee of the week

I don't feel the need to work for my inner self no. I work because it gets me money.

If I was lucky enough to win millions I'd retire in a breath, but I'd do plenty of things that some might call work - but I'd be doing them for fun and not for need.

And often its people who have such an attitude who waste half their life moaning how rubbish their job is instead of doing something about it.

exactly, in the world where capitalist exploiters are a bad thing and being obsessed with meeting targets is not the aim of life. Shame you don't agree.

And what's that very broad and general assertion based on? Evidence or just your gut feeling?

Although I dislike such characters, there probably wouldn't be any jobs without them.

I think we could have high standards of living without cut throat capitalism. But of course the great trick of capitalism is to make people think There Is No Alternative with the result that people get into line like good little boys and girls and make money for a bunch of leeches.

Do you feel the need to work in the sense of keeping active? I don't mean in terms of needing to work for the money to pay bills but rather without work you would feel bored of life and without direction? I've heard this point being made before and find it very odd. There is so much to do, often costing very little, that I find it so sad that people feel they are nothing without sitting in some boring open planned office for 37 hrs a week typing away.

Work can mean more than money.
To some people it also gives a sense of purpose in life.

Of course, given enough money we can find that sense of purpose in other ways like volunteer work for charity, devoting our lives to some cause or even following a hobby or pastime.
Unfortunately, for most of us, amassing that money requires years of hard work.

I think most people would want to look back on their lives as having had some purpose other than pure self-indulgence.

But that's one of the points I'm making. I recognise people work for reasons besides money. I am then going on to say is it not rather sad and depressing that so many people feel lost and without direction because they don't have a 9-5 routine to go to? There is so much to do, backpack around the world, read, write, paint, learn a language or three and yet there are people who even if they could afford not to work are still doing it and for what? So they can meet next months target and get on a pat on the back from some boss?
