i can never find our Home Bargains - I know it's at Clifton Moor, but it's such a rambling place I can never find it! I usually give up and head back on the bus...[/QUOTE I also live in york hello,if you get of the number 6 bus to tesco ,you need to turn right when you get off the bus and follow the footpath round passing the vue cinima on your right handside ,you,ll see a roundabout and if you turn first left there is a whole parade of shops including home bargains , dunelm, materland ,family bargains ,peacocks, brantano and a poundstretcher style shop it a 5/10 min walk .if your unable to walk that far there is a number 20bus that takes you from the tesco stop around to the tenpin bowling alley that is at the bottom of the parade of shops . (there is 2x number 20s so make sure you ask the driver if hes going in the direction of tenpin opposed to acomb)x

I am thinking of making crackers from the inside of toilet rolls. I'm sure I read it somewhere! Does anyone know where to get the things that you pull and go bang in the crackers?

Tried this before, ended taking ages and couldn't get the bang working. Ended up using these ones that I mentioned in an earlier post, worked a treat. http://www.uniquelycrackers.co.uk/musical-crackers.html

Mr Muppet and I will definitely be doing a re-run of last year, when we had a 1940s Christmas Day.

Friends came to join us and loved it!

Wartime food (mock goose with all trimmings and wartime christmas pud made with mashed potato and grated carrot), Mr Muppets HM beer, 1940s clothes, 1940s music on the ipod (not very 1940s i know but hidden in an old Tannoy speaker), 1940s games to play, the old windup gramaphone playing a few 78s, very simple (useful) pressies wrapped in recycled paper and string, homemade crackers( pull and shout BANG).

Such a lovely day and a fraction spent compared with usual Christmases.

Finished day by slipping into PJs and curling up in front of fire with a mug of cocoa. Bliss!
Thank you for this site :jNow OH and I are both retired, MSE is a Godsend
  • Hi folks. Loving the tips on here. I am hoping to do a frugal christmas this year. I am intend to do homemade hampers for my family containing jams, chutneys which I will make in advance and then some home made cakes, truffles, muffins etc which I will make nearer the time.

Well that was the idea. I am now wondering if I should do themed hampers. eg: sewing and craft hamper for my mum etc. Not sure - think the food ones would be easier.

Awww I love this thread. Ive been thinking about it alot recently. I remember how fast sept, oct and november flew over last year so thought now was the time to get started.

We used to have a huge family christmas but family memebers have past away and more recently my sister and her kids moved etc. So this year there is myself, OH, 4 year old son and my mam and aunty.

Bought a few items already from the next sale,,,,dressing gown £10 slippers £3 for my mam and aunty and got my OH some t-shirts and then Im going to start properly when our 4 year old is back in school.

Cleared a shelf in the kitchen for some christmas food. When Im at the supermarket I tend to get a few BOGOFs of crisps, crackers and sweets and pop them away. Its a tradition my mam used to do so Im carrying it on.

Also making an advent calender for our son. In each pocket there is a card which tells him to do something festive....make christmas cookies today....take a ride on the santa train....make your list for santa....decorate some baubles. Just helps keep him entertained and excited for Santa coming.

Love reading all the suggestions, tips and ideas x
