Well done Eoin, I wondered how you got on because you had it so tough in Jan/Feb. Glad to see things are a bit better for you.Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

The disposable plates and bowls might be handy if you cannot wash or don't want to waste bottled water tryingto wash proper items...
Well done on the potatoes BB...
You have reminded me I must get a couple more can openers tomorrow I am using my last one - do have a couple of cheap ones but they seem to be very blunt so want some like one i have a nice chunky sharp one.
Will add that to my list of things I need to get to replace what I gave away today plus a few other bits and bobs.
I have ordered another camping stove, heater and 28 cans of gas from a place on ebay - sold as a set or you can buy separately £59incl pp - so that will give me two stoves, two heaters as already have one of each and plenty of gas ( I have 5 cans in just now). So should see me through a week or so I hope shouldn't need longer than that even if very bad winter storms knocks out the power.
I do miss not having a fire ( ok I have two open fireplaces in bedrooms but furniture is in front of them as well as wood to keep out the draught as when years ago we had power cuts the fire kept us warm, cooked our food and heated up the water. If things were ever to get so bad I could take gas fire out of wall as its never used anyway and cook in fireplace there, but sadly there is no back boiler any more, but that is only if we have full world meltdown - but I do have a couple of bags of coal I picked up at garage a few years ago stuck at round the back of the greenhouse just in case. I know a bit OTT but coal isn't going to go off and they were doing a buy one get one free at cost me £2 as only 100kg in each so not last long.
I am getting a couple of free gifts with my dehydrators - one is a cheap version of a swiss army knife so that can go in my emergency stores. Once dehydrator comes I hope then to be able to add to my stocks by buying cheap fruit and veg and drying it as well as storing whatever I can harvest from the garden.
For washing up store tap water - you have the outhouse - put some bottles of tap water in there, will keep for 6 months and fine for washing up, loo etc., I keep about 6 5lt bottles ( from mineral water) at bottom of the pantry as its the coolest darkest place I have.Need to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch

On a storecupboardy note, I have started stashing the 19p Tesco tinned potatoes. They're long-dated til 2015 and I bet they won't be so cheap for long. You read it here first, children.
I saw on the news tonight how the potato crops in this country have been terrible this year due to all the rain we've been having, along with strawberry crops (and many others they didn't show, I imagine - I for one have lost various herbs and lots of tomatoes to the rain so far!). So you've probably got a very good idea going there - I think I'll be adding a few tins to my shopping list this weekend!0 -
My courgettes which flowered wonderfully have now started to rot. They are normally an easy veg to grow.0

I will also be stashing some more 19p tinned potatoes and I don't think that they will be around at that price for long, now that it has been on the news about poor crops.
And I love frozen mash...couple of minutes in the micro. Done.
Asda had 1kg bags for a quid, but I expect that will change soon.0 -
I think a lot of plants are not going to make it this year, my courgettes at moment are in flower but are in grow house ( I managed to pick up two for £16) both 4ft long and 6ft high and 2ft wide and fit nicely along a fence behind fruit cage and I think my main produce I do get will be what has been grown in there this year. I shoved a couple of old tv meal tables in them that we never use, so have been able to double to growing room - growbags of plants that don't grow to high on the ground then pots on the tables. Looks odd but working.Need to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch

I don't get to Mr T very often but Mr S are also doing them for 19p at the moment, enough for two meals for one or one meal for two which does hubby and me unless we have mash then I need a tin each or instant ( which I do not really like but will eat if I have to)Need to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch

As long as I am here I can use the outhouse. pantry and a passage that is covered and usually cold all the year around,,,as you said PAH...
You know my mobility is poor and so if I have shopping to carry it's taxi time, two ideas to help...I used to(so why not now)wear a back bag freeing my hands so I can use my walking stick?
Someone said get a shopping trolley then I can I hang on to the handle of the trolley so another possible couple of items to go on the list. They will help the store cupboard even though indirectly."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

You know I'm a fan of the shopping trolley pops. Mine has paid for itself in the short time I have had it because I don't need to get the bus and maybe the same could be said for you with the taxi fees?
Could you walk with your stick while pulling one behind you? They one I have is exceptionally light. Or the other idea would be a 4 wheeled one that you push in front of you?
There are also ones with a seat, for a rest stop?
Something to think about anyway. A back pack would certainly help too.0 -
Thanks Fuddle,
The back bag(if they get them back in stock again there is a blue 30L capacity one by Addidas worth £21.99(Half price)at Argos...
I have seen a similar shopping trolley for approx £34 same place...I could hold onto the handle with both hands or as you say could I manage with one where I use my stick but pull the trolley from behind with one hand...
I may be able to for the amount of shopping I do...
But then as you say would ine with a seat be handy? Decisions, decisions
I may start with the bag first and see how we go...but you know me...I'll end up with both!
Wonder why I have only just thought of using a backpack and trolley, could have been doing this for years..."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson
