  • I've lost files in the past, so I've learnt the hard way.
For things I don't want to lose I backup to the cloud now every day.
  • There have been some very good ideas in this thread, ones I've used and recommended include Dropbox, Carbonite, and crash plan which has a very clever trick which lets you back up to another hard drive over the internet for free.

For example if my friend and I both buy a 2Tb external USB hard drive, with the free crash plan software I could back up to his drive and vice versa.

However my back up problem is this:

Like other people on this here thread, I store all my data on NAS boxes, one for Music and Audiobooks, the other for video.

All of the cloud backup providers I've tried either don't support NAS drives at all, or they charge a set fee per NAS, normally £50+ per box which in my case doubles for 2 of them, or they don't support unlimited data storage, often topping out at 100Gb for their basic subscription.

What I want, and so far haven't been able to find, is a cloud provider who offers unlimited storage, who supports backing up from an external drive, and who don't charge humongous amounts

The ability to restore deleted files and folders a la Dropbox is a must.

So far Crashplan is in the lead. Dropbox is out on cost grounds. Unlimited is available in their business offering, but only for 5 or more users. Crashplan does an unlimited "family" account, and they do allow connecting NAS drives but it's unsupported and a bit of a faff to set up.. So have any NAS users hit the holy cloud grail? Please let me know,

  • I back up every month.
  • every week. i lose some precious data on the past because i forgot to back at least a month. :) now im too paranoid that i back up my files every weekend.
  • I tend to backup my PC once a month to a hard drive. I make sure all my important documents are stored on there. I also have virus protection and scan my PC weekly. That way I can keep it secure: I also do my best to avoid dodgy websites that tend to have adware/malware and all that other stuff. ;)
  • I used to back up my work documents every month but every since I started to use cloud backing up service such as DropBox, GoogleDrive etc. it is done automatically.

My HD is backed up once every three months.
  • while I have a mixed community of computers, I favour the opensource tool - rsync for everything , MAC, Linux and Windows. It is efficicnet in that it backs up the changes each time, and runs every hour. Its very simple, easy to see what its doing and seems reliable.

I work from my Dropbox folder (110gb) on my laptop which also contains my iTunes folder and my photos folder.

The laptop drive which includes Dropbox folder plus my movie files and other stuff too big for Dropbox gets backed up weekly to my 2x 1tb nas (RAID).

Finally, the laptop mirrors my main data D: drive to another internal drive E: so all that is backed up too, in case the primary drive gets knackered whilst away from wifi or the nas.

Writing all that down it looks like I'm properly paranoid, but i wouldn't want to return my CDs or lose my photos, let alone my work stuff which would be irreplaceable... I make that five copies of my irreplaceable stuff (including cloud) and 4 of the rest of it...

Can anyone spot any kinks in my backup armour? :rotfl:

    Yep! :D

Possibly, anyway, because if your NAS and all those backup drives are permanently connected, you are vulnerable to the likes of Cryptolocker, which also encrypts mapped drives as well as local drives.

I don't use Dropbox, and imagine if has some sort of version control which might help in that scenario, but I don't know how easy it is to go back to the previous version of 100s of files.

You need some sort of offline backup which isn't permanently connected.
