I back up all my important stuff; documents, photos, music etc daily to my NAS using synctoy. I keep meaning to looking into live synchronising but never get around to it.

I back up my bookmarks now and then and have a win7 restore disk with all the basics installed. If the worst happens and my system drive dies then its just a case of installing some programs and tweaking it. Nothing too major.

Everything important goes into "My Documents" and I back that up on a monthly basis to an external 1TB drive.

    I have 2 x 2tb internal drives.

One drive is syncronised with the other using syncback.

I run the sync once a week.

I use an online service to backup my PC - it synchs every few mins - which means that if my PC blows up, I can recover everything that is important at any time.

I was contemplating buying an external hard disk - but then if that fails - any many have done - you are left with nothing!

Also thought about backing up to DVD - but I cannot be bothered. At least with the online backup - I don't have to think about it - as they would have several disks they probably back up to!

The only thing - for the paranoid - is security - as the data is not within your 'personal' space. However, you can choose what to and what not to backup - so very useful.

If anyone wants to know - please ask.
I don't want to mention the name of the service here just incase people think I am advertising it (which I am not!)

    HTH:)

HP as off a few months ago stopped making Windows Home Servers but a few others still do with a new Version of the Windows Home Server due out soon from Microsoft.

Basically its a separate box that up to 10 PC's in your house it will back daily or whatever schedule you prefer. It backs up everything and because it is incremental can afford to keep a copy of "everything" from when the day the PC was built a few years ago.

It will also support Apple Mac's. Worth looking at and also allows a full system restore to any earlier point assuming you have kept the backup that far back.

  • I am using DropBox for my day to day files to copy files between a number of machines and hold a copy online as well. For larger directories of archives and as a belt and braces for the day-to-day stuff I use MemoPal . They cost a small annual fee (but not much) and the computer quietly backs everything up while I'm working. I know there is a debate about this type of cloud approach to things, but I am not great at backing up. On a security note, I am a Mac user (mainly) and I use the Disk Utility to convert files into 128 bit encrypted password protected items.

    Agree totally

I backup to two external disks.

Would be really annoyed if I lost the work stuff and heartbroken to lose the pics of the kids growing up

Last 6 months two power cuts have destroyed my computer hard drive and one of the backup disks
Opinions are like a**holes, everyone has one.
