I go over kill. My backup plan is like works :)

    Monday full daily backup
    Tues-thurs Differential daily backup
    Friday full weekly backup

Then starts over again next week but week is week2 full backup.

That goes on for 3 weeks. Then month 1 backup :)

3 weeks worth backups get kept for 3 weeks then overwritten. The month backups get kept for 3 months then overwritten.

Over kill I know :) but helps me learn at same time.

Is it worth buying a harddrive to back up on if all you have are word documents as they dont take up much space...

not really a dvd is much cheaper, but backing up windows with disk imaging software may be handy one day when your pc won't boot.

I hardly back up but I have copies of most of my movies and mp3's in DVD's. I think its time to back up the 10GB worth of pics.

I use Time Machine on my Macbook Pro, and have my portable external hard drive plugged in whenever at my desk. I didn't back up for the first few months I had my Mac, but after nearly losing all my data, I decided to fork out the 50 or so quid for peace of mind. Time Machine makes backing up effortless -- although I haven't tried restoring yet!
  • I think I'm quite a panicky person as I backup up every day and I have 3 external hard drives running at all times. I did suffer from a serious data loss once and it caused me so much grief that I vowed never again. With hard drives so cheap it makes sense to have one. I use a couple of the Western Digital Passport Drives (NOT THE ESSENTIAL DRIVES THOUGH, they have issues with Mac and PC usage and you have to format it before use which causes futher issues)

The rule of thumb is "You never use your backups but you always wished you had one!"

Make you more panicky. You should really put those drives in a safe part of the house/flat at the end of the day :) even in a fire proof safe.

    :)

Only joking. Companies do that though. Backup to tape, end of day tape goes into a fire proof safe either off site or on the same site but in a different fire zone.

Maybe an idea though. Take one of those drives, put all the info needed on it, and put it away. So if you had an power blow out and everything connected went pop, you'd have at least one drive in storage with backups.
  • I back up as often as possible, which for me is usually weekly. I have too much important information to lose!
  • I'm a digital illustrator so it'd be pretty catastrophic if I lost all the files on my PC, I'd basically be waving goodbye to my entire portfolio of work!

I do most of my work on my main PC, but I make a copy of everything once a week on my laptop so I can always work on that if my PC explodes. As well as that I back everything up to a high capacity external hard drive every time I complete a project.

This is pretty handy If I decide to reformat or upgrade either of my machines, 'cause I know I'm safe to wipe them clean and restore everything from the external drive afterwards :)
