That is what I use. The initial back-up obviously takes some time but after that, it backs up for me automatically every night and takes about 2 minutes.

Those using Mozy/Dropbox might want to look at Windows Live Mesh at https://www.mesh.com

Its similar, but allows up to 5gb space and is all free. Supports XP+Vista+OS X

    Worth a look.

I suggested this a few posts back up this conversation (last October), but some people had concerns. I've been using it regularly since then, and it has worked without problem. I use it to sync much more than 5Gb between PCs - it just won't store the data on the net for those files.

I've found a workaround to syncing large files initially via the internet (which hammers your bandwidth) - just sync them initially using Synctoy before turning on the Mesh syncing. It just checks they are the same and marks them as complete. Then you can leave it alone to pick up any changes...

Just remember that Mesh is still technically in beta...

  • I have some advice for backing up if you are not way inclined to buy an external hard drive you should try and purchase an online backing up service

Also i would try and devlop a PBS, Personal Backup Stratigy

Does anyone know of a backup program, that will spilt huge folders across loads of cds? I use to use music match 7 (or 6:confused:) and that use to do it. It didnt spilt the files, just worked out the best way of getting the most out of each disc! Its was great for backing up all my mp3's :j

    Thanks in advance

I try and remember to do it weekly, but it works out generally as every 2 weeks I reckon - decent enough though I suppose. Better than nothing for sure!
  • I don't back up anywhere near as often as I should - on the poll I would have voted for the option "Only after you've learned the hard way"! I'd be surprised if most people haven't made the mistake of not backing up important data... Oh well now I have two hard drives: one 100Gb and one 250 Gb, so I don't have an excuse anymore not to.

I had a problem where my hard drive was completely wiped. Don't ask me how, but after I re-installed XP, I bought an external hard drive, and once I had got everything back on, I did a full system back up, and I do a My Documents back up periodically. I also do a full back up every three months or so. I do this with my desktop, laptop, and netbook.
