I've had this problem myself and a bit of googling reveals many people suffering, it seems that many firewire cards aren't properly supported in Windows7 and Microsoft have given up on further support.
Some people with Windows 7 issues have success by changing the firewire driver to 'legacy firewire' - google it and you'll see.
Thanks for the info. I have a Toshiba laptop with Windows 7 and FireWire. I should test it.0 -
An update. I installed and played the camcorder on the xp computer BUT that was installing and having the camera connected at the same time. Once you disconnect and restart the computer it won't play the the camcorder as it's looking for macromedia to be installed which was discontinued by adobe in 2009.

Going back a couple of years or so I wanted to upload my minidvs to my computer. I was helped by quite a few wonderful people on MSE to install a firewire card(?) purchase the right firewire cable and everything worked out (though I never did achieve then burning my minidvs to disk. My pc is an old Dell one (which I'm using still) and it runs XP. Maybe you should try your old computer that runs XP?:j I hope my comment helps :T0
