The solution to this is to not answer the door. A genuine visitor will call you on the mobile/landline and ask where you are or a meter reader will leave a card.

I never answer my door to anyone unless I am expecting them so next time just roll over and go back to sleep for another half hour.

In over 40 years of having my meter read I've never had a phone call prior to a reading.
    It's someone else's fault.

Right... well the account did update so he was genuine but stupid EDF have put my readings the wrong way round (day and night). I spent ages sorting this out the last time they did it >.< how hard can it be?

That's not what they said. They said a genuine visitor (ie friend or family) would call.

Read the bolded part it says nothing about friends or family. A contracted meter reader is most definitely a genuine visitor.

So he wrote them down wrong or entered them wrong when his written ones were right?

I wonder how many more people end up sorting problems out because this meter reader is chasing his bonus?

Whilst it may not seem a big issue to most people, its caused you time/money to sort it out...he gets a bonus and a "well done" of his boss.

EDF allow a 7.30 am start, Brit Gas and others its 8.0 am. the bloke will be genuine, but I will give him 10 out of 10 for cheek and nerve banging on doors at that hour. I dont like knocking before 8.30 am myself and usually try and find some outsde meters to register my start times as everything we do,or dont do, is timed on the HHC. He would have left a callback card if no access gained. EDF demand an unrealistic 75% access on their contract and the managers really push us to get it. I think the lad may have been a new starter and not used to modern joe publics mardy ways nowadays, I ve had people say they are disgusted that I am knocking disturbing them at 9.30 am.. Bill should come approx a week later but you could expect anything from this slapdash company
Yes Kirei the meter reader did put the day and night readings the wrong way round as they have been doing for years until our managers get the message and train the meter readers with the various meters out there, as you say, how hard can it be

If EDF are anything like SSE, the managers are more interested in spying on their meter readers for silly things like making sure they use a peg when putting call-back cards through letterboxes even when it is obvious there is no dog present in the house, than actually worrying about making sure meter readers are reading the darn meters correctly. After all, what does that matter??!!!

I know - I worked for SSE as a meter reader until recently. Their customer service is better than most other utility companies, but how they treat their meter readers is an absolute disgrace.

He wrote them down RIGHT because I actually checked. This same thing happened the last time a meter reader came, they did it wrong and I spent ages getting it sorted. Now they've done it wrong AGAIN! What a pain! Sent them an email this time because last time I wasted £££ phoning them.

It gets complicated now because EDF have tried to get their act together and have re mapped our HHC s to take into account that the readers are entering the correct reading but into the wrong field on the hhc. Our hhc s are set to record 1 = night and 2= day. The meter readers are taking that to mean a meter showing rate 1, must go into the night field. until they are trained properly to understand how the eco 7 meters work, and they can vary, simple mess-ups like this continue. in this case I reckon EDF have switched his readings expecting him to mess it up. Its bonkers. At our last team meeting I volunteered to train them, so far havent heard anything from management from them. Also to remember at that early hour that that meter reader was imputting, the meter would still be on night rate until approx 8.30 am

I had a meter reader from EDF call the other day just after half seven on my day off! Answered the door to a very jolly man who wanted to check that the woman downstairs.. Mrs X had died. Yes, I said, she died two years ago now and the place has been empty since. Two days later a bill arrives addressed to the dead woman. What is the matter with them?
