I don't understand the drama. If it's illegal then that is wrong, but if it's not then it's fine - nothing to do with 'morals'.
I said there would be those who didn't understand the question.

But let me ask this. Should you observe the spirit or the letter of the law?

The whole point of tax allowances is to encourage people to avoid tax.

Everyone gets tax allowances at some level.
Lots of people avoid tax by paying into a pension scheme.
Some avoid tax by washing their uniform at home.
Others avoid tax by pricing their house at just under the stamp duty threshold.

Jimmy Carr has just made a statement (don't have text at moment) saying he's made a terrible error of judgement.

It's amusing having a politician try and lecture people on morals.

In a series of messages on Twitter Mr Carr said: "I appreciate as a comedian, people will expect me to 'make light' of this situation, but I'm not going to in this statement.

"As this is obviously a serious matter. I met with a financial advisor and he said to me 'Do you want to pay less tax? It's totally legal'. I said 'Yes'."

"I now realise I've made a terrible error of judgement.

"Although I've been advised the K2 Tax scheme is entirely legal, and has been fully disclosed to HMRC (Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs).

"I'm no longer involved in it and will in future conduct my financial affairs much more responsibly. Apologies to everyone. Jimmy Carr."

An etymology question for the board's favourite librarian. At what point did 'I am an idiot/hypocrite/liar' become 'I made an error of judgement'?

My guess is Nixon or Clinton pre-impeachment hearings as it has a political ring to it.

I have to say, this whole thing is nonsense.

If the government doesn't want businesses or individuals to use the legal exemptions it has put in place, it should change the law.
“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

If the government don't like the ways of avoidance then they should close them. I half suspect they don't as MP's are using them as well!

Well it is legal, but it is not fine.

99% of the country would agree that Jimmy(fake laugh) Carr should be paying 25% of his earnings to the taxman, I wish someone would ask him directly if there is any particular reason why he should be an exception.
Jimmy Carr is using his advantage of wealth to pay sneaky little people to use TRICKS to not pay what he has to pay.

I am certain Jimmy Carr is by no means the worst case in the UK, he is probably(because of his moral preaching) being used as a smokescreen and a scapegoat. I bet there is £10's Billions of potential tax avoidance money out there, if not a lot more.

Wealth today can remove you from doing what is fair if you are that devious, it can even get you off many crimes. There is a Guy(forget his name) who is a sneaky scumbag lawyer who will get you off 99% of all driving crimes short of running over the queen with a bottle of vodka in one hand a spliff in the other, you just need the money to pay his huge bill.

Jimmy Carr is not the most guilty here, David Cameron is by a long shot, and for too many reason to post on here, be he has and is allowing tax avoidence on a huge scale, it's in the family blood.

This reminds me of the Panorama article in May. HMRC declined to discuss the issue due to 'tax payer confidentiality' afforded to mega corporations and individuals'.

Who blew the whistle on Jimmie Carr ?
