You don't want him doing it. But by you own admission he does do it. Notice the disconnect there?

    LOL, bazster.

    Reality check for you.

In the real world children have been known to continue to do things their parents have told them not to do.

Has anyone suggested that we PLEASE think of the children yet?

    Excellent point.

Well... from what I remember, it wasn't anything to do with kettles! :D

Completely agree with you. Children in general are known to do the opposite at times. Sometimes quite deliberately.

This is why I would NOT allow my child in the kitchen unattended. He would not get an opportunity to climb up the kitchen cupboards, especially with any sort of kettle or hot pan that he may stroke his leg across, panic and knock it over as a result.

There is not a chance on Earth I would allow him to climb the Kitchen units for anything. I don't do it, the Mrs doesn't and he could not even attempt to, not unless he had somehow been allowed into the Kitchen unattended where he might just try it.

Many a time have I answered the door, only to find him climbing up the shelving units, crawling behind the television or chewing on electric cables. All potentially fatal, all of which results in a telling off until it happens again.

This is all the more reason I would not allow him free reign in the Kitchen, where he could get onto the units, could grab or knock over that kettle, could pull over that fryer, grab a knife, turn on the hobs, etc etc.

The very idea of him being in such a predicament that he might rub the kettle with his leg and knock it over, is just not possible as he is NOT allowed or able to get in the Kitchen without supervision. Even with supervision, there is no way he is allowed to climb up the units.

I don't think any decent parent would allow a child of that age free reign in a kitchen. Accidents can happen though, even when you're with them.

I was born in 1973. My home had 2 open fireplaces, cupboard doors with no locks, kettles with no cool sides, cookers with no guards and stairs with no stair gates.

Should I venture toward any one of the forbidden things I'd be swiftly rewarded with a smack to the back of my hand and a firm 'NO!' from my Mother.

Not only did I manage to survive this death trap, my first visit to A&E for injury came at 17 when I cut myself badly whilst ratarsed.

Personally I think people can take it too far. I've seen friends with locks on everything including the fridge, every ornament is 6ft off the ground, every door has a gate. I had a gate at the top of the stairs and a fireguard for mine when they were small and nothing more. They were taught what was allowed to be touched and what wasn't and especially taught that kitchens, stairs and bathrooms were not places to play.

    Both survived.

Agreed, whilst we all as parents do our utmost to ensure child safety, inevitably there will be accidents, we all pray not too severe and that maybe a harsh lesson was learned.

(Off topic I know) I get more frustrated at parents who choose to ignore the traffic lights at pelican crossings whilst with their children, you see them often running across the road with the redman standing because they feel its safe, sometimes ignoring the crossing completely and scurrying across a couple of Yards down the road. What is this teaching the children? To wait for the Green Man UNLESS you see a gap??

Parents should lead by example when it comes to hazards in general, else their children are never likely to learn right from wrong.

P.S. I am not singling or insinuating yourself in this, I am sure we all do our best for our kids ;)

I gathered it was to do with maybe a hazard involving a small child who maybe did something which was dangerous or no dangerous as such but something that could harm him.

    Thanks Lip Stick

Although I too never read the OP, I think it had something to do with a child burning themselves from the hot tap after the heating had been serviced.
