am currently swopping to cable to a tv/phone/broadband package and wondered what happens with 1899?
I have this at the moment on my BT line - do i need to contact 1899 about swopping or do i need to leave the service and re-apply? I am keeping my number - but i realise that i will have to dial something different to connect to 1899 via cable
hmmm - dunno if any of you can help - i am confusing myself here
thanks in advance

See HERE you will need to dial an 0808 numberDon`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
Remember that the price of 1899 calls to UK landlines is timed when using the 0808 access number. So, in addition to the 3p connection charge, you have to pay 0.5p/min.
But if you are getting broadband you can currently use 1899 from your computer to make completely free calls to UK landlines!0 -

Calls to fixed landlines are free after the 3p connection charge, see my link above and when page opened, top right hand corner UK landlines 0.0!!Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -

As far as I can see from their website, 1899's charges for cable users (access via the 08081708708 freephone number) are the same as for those on BT landlines using their 1899 prefix - 3p connection and 0p per minute.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -

As you're on cable your cheapest option tito make your calls using 1899 via your computer.
If you use 1899 VoIP there is no connection charge so all your UK/US/Canada/German calls are absolutely free.
If you're technically competent I'd suggest investing in a Sippphone too. All the the aspects of this solution are discussed in a big thread below.

Actually, I am correct after all. 1899 access via their freefone number is 0.5p/min plus 3p connection - just tried using them for a long call (thinking it would be cheaper than 18866) but got message of 0.5p/min!0 -

Now I am confused. I can't see anything about 0.5p/minute for users of the 0808 number on the 1899 website.30 years, 217 days!0 -
My mum uses 1899 from a cable phone using the 0808 access number with calls ebing charged on my bill and I can confirm it is 3p connection charge and 0p per minute for UK land lines.

Just confirming what stellagypsy says (at least for NTL line):
1899: 3p + 0p per minute
18866: 2p + 0.5p per minute.
In other words, calls for NTL customers are cheaper on 1899 -- so long as the call is over 2 minutes long. For less than 2 min, then 18866 is cheaper.
Have just checked my online bills for both accounts!0 -

Yes, I know - I wanted to keep on 1,000 posts as long as possible and when I posted my amended reply I realised I had 1,001 posts - so I deleted the one with 0.5p to get back to 1,000 again!
That means I get two MSE prizes for reaching 1,000 posts twice!0
