Any suggestions apart from supermarket vouchers that have already been mentioned?

Amex gift cards. You can buy 5*£100 per transaction, no purchase or delivery fee with code GCNF1.

Bit gutted the 3% is ending. Given that the limit on mine is £250 I'm not going to bother for 0.5%.

I've already had to pay £12 for going over my limit, which was ok because the cashback I got far outweighed that, but for 0.5% it isn't worth the risk.

    Good while it lasted.

This sounds like a good plan ! ;)
  • Amex gift cards -use them within one year- hidden in the T & Cs is this-

Starting 12 months after the date of Activation of the Gift Card, we will deduct a non-refundable Monthly Fee of £1.50 from the Gift Card Balance.

But you need to find somewhere to spend them, which I assume would be the same as the full credit card.

So instead of maxing your Aqua limit on Amex gift cards, it might make more sense to just take out an Amex Platinum Cashback Everyday Credit Card, giving you 5% for 3 months (upto £100).

The gift card gives you access to the rate for 12 months though (before it starts charging you a fee) - The credit card is only for 3 months. Although I suppose you could buy the gift cards with an Amex credit card ??

Most retailers accept Amex cards these days. See http://www.whoacceptsamex.co.uk/

Or even better, do both. In terms of getting the aqua cashback by deferred spending, the Amex gift card seems like a strong option, imo (along with paying utility bills early, and 'safe'* gift cards. Amex acceptance is widespread that it shouldn't cause a huge problem.

Maybe we should be clear that we're discussing non-trivial strategies, so these are just suggestions that people should research and make sure they fully understand before implementing.

But you're right, it is, of course, worth remembering that said spend could be used to generate cashback on another card, and for people to make choices based on their spending patterns.

(* Remembering any gift card carries some risk)

I received my letter yesterday. I'm trying to work out when I received my card, the valid from date on my card is 12/12 - hopefully I have couple of weeks to spend as much as possible. I've sent a message via my online account to check the date.

That code expires on 31 December which is probably too soon for neilsedaka.
  • Thanks for the suggestions. I think the most simple answer is for us to buy Tesco gift cards which we can use for our normal Tesco shopping over the following year. As this Aqua card has a limit of only £400 please remind me of the procedure to preload the card for use on 20th/21st January.
