Advice please - O2 phone shop
Options
Looking for some advice!
My dad had a phone for a number of years, recently the battery has started to fail. He bought it originally from the O2 shop, and kept going in to see if they could replace it. As the phone was old, they said they couldn't.
The phone was very basic, just did calls & texts with a proper keypad.
On his most recent visit, they said again that they couldn't replace it and said he would have to get a new phone. This was around a month ago.
My question is twofold:
1. They have given him a Samsung Galaxy Y. At the age of 77 he is, of course, really struggling to use it. He noticed on the receipt that he could have taken it back within 14 days but unfortunately he has now had it for around a month.
I cannot believe that the shop have sold a 77 year old man a smartphone.
How do we stand with going back to the shop to change it for a different phone?
2. They have put him on a £10 a month pay as you go (I think it may be a version of O2 simplicity). As he gets loads of free texts and some free MB internet, he is at a loss to know how to use the credit as he rarely uses the phone.
Can anybody advise what happens if he doesn't top up £10 a month??
Am I best to just complain direct to the manager of the shop and see what happens?

I see nothing in your post to give grounds to complain. At the age of 77 he is, of course, really struggling to use it.
As you wre not present you have no evidence that your father was co-erced into buying the phone. It may have been a good idea at the time and now he finds that he can not actually manage the phone. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. If the phone is not connected to wifi at home and your father uses internet, he has to be cautios as the allowance is just 100Mb.
If he doesn't topup, the credit will be used on everything, including the mobile data that the phone consumes without asking him.O2 wrote:I want to check my Pay & Go balance To check your balance use Hotkey 2 or key *#10# then press the call button and your calltime balance will be shown on your display. Alternatively dial 4444 FREE from your mobile to hear your balance and to top-up.
You need at least 1 minute of calltime credit to make a call. When your calltime falls too low, you'll get messages indicating you're nearly out of credit until you're finally diverted to the O2 top-up line.Am I best to just complain direct to the manager of the shop and see what happens?0 -
Thank you for your responses.
Perhaps I should have explained that I live in Nottingham and my father lives in Telford. Of course, had I been in the same location I would have been to the shop already to sort this out.
He also did not tell me in our telephone conversations of the problems he had been having with the battery in the old phone.
Forgive me my selfishness, I'll go down this weekend and sort it out.
Sorry to bother you.0 -

Thank you for this - I was unable to find the tariff online for £10 a month, you are right 100mb is not much.
Thank you for also explaining what will happen if he does not top up.0 -

Why of course? Age does not preclude the ability to use modern technology.

Quite, I have friends in their70s and90s who happily use their phones and PVR digital camera.
And something like a Galaxy Y has a large easy to read screen and the keypad on screen is bigger than physical keys.0 -
O2 both online and in store give you 14 days to change your mind about any phone, contract or Payg0

Sell the phone on ebay and buy what you like instead.
Good ideaI got a bog-standard O2 LG phone through Argos on ebay for just under £15. I can only call and text but it's perfect for what it's needed for. Good clear screen and big buttons!

Find out if its PAYG or pay monthly and go from there. I've just signed up to O2 simplicity for 12 months at £10.50 per month - 300+500mins, unlimited texts and 100mb. Could be the same deal.

If you want this deal, go via topcashback and get £50.50 cashback, making it just £6.30/month.0 -
