I hate Packard Bell.
Use this Sigmatel STAC9750T Audio Driver if Tanglefoot's Realtek Driver option fails.
The Packard Bell website holds a similar Driver
Another option is the WDM Driver here
But likely my first link will work.0 -

Perhaps they are, but I'm not limiting my hate to just these. Though to be fair, perhaps ACER have tidied things up a bit since they took over.0 -
A Big Hello to Tanglefoot, TakeThis & Santer;
Thank you all for your input tonight, it is much appreciated.
The story so far tonight,
Tanglefoot - the motherboard download had an unknown error. I might try it again from a different download area.
TaketThis - The Sigmatel link leads to "driver not available" page but thank you.
The Packard bell download - loaded etc but had no effect.
Yes, this is a NEC machine - will it help my sound problem? :-)
Santer - I am away to try yours :-)
Any help for some sound would be appreciated :-)
Cheers
Amanda
Update
Santer, thank you. I realised when I clicked on your "try" that I had tried that one at the weekend. My pc crashes as the driver has not been certified by windows.
I have emailed realtek to this if they have a solution.
Thank you all for your help :-)0 -

Nope. Just commenting on the fact that we've seen several fairly similar machines quite recently:0 -

That's because you have not completed the install.Self-extracting archive, download the file then double-click it to let it unpack the driver files to the C:\PNP\AUDIO folder.
Update the audio driver in WinXP device manager and point to the C:\PNP\AUDIO folder so Windows can find the new drivers.

Hi TakeThis,
I have done the above and I still have no sound. sniff sniff.
I really do appreciate the help you have given me.
I don't need my sound for much, maybe a usb sound card might be the answer.
Thank you.0 -

But is the Driver now installed?
If not, why not?0 -
Hi,
I'm not a 100% sure. I have nothing basically after the failure of AC'97 and in it's place at the moment is Sigmatel C Major Audio.
I found the device manager no problem. I found how to do the update the driver - thank you. I am now wondering am I in the right place lol
In device manager I have been dealing with
Sound, Video and game controllers :-)0
