Window Certified Driver Needed for Realtek AC'97 Audio Codec

HELP:eek:
Hello,
I am so frustrated.
I have no sound on my pc - Windows XP Home Edition 2002 Service Pack 3. The pc itself is a Packard Bell.
I have tried many downloads from the Realtek site. My pc crashes everytime. Windows comes up with the message that the driver is not certified and then it recovers from a serious error.
Microsoft tell me, after the automatic error reporting, after the crash, to go to Realtek but I just go round in a circle.
I've googled it, I read other peoples problems along the same line but I am no further forward.
I did have the older version of AC'97 Audio Codec but it had the yellow sign with code 10. Cannot start.
I uninstalled and re-installed but again I was going round in circles.
I uninstalled the old version and deleted it out of the bin so it would not automatically load again.
Have I reached the end of the line?
Will I not be able to have sound again?
Is my computer too old?
It has never given me any problems before.
Any help to bring back my sound would be appreciated :j
Thank you
Amanda

There's probably an elegant solution to this problem out there somewhere, but when I had the same issue with someone elses PC I couldn't find it!
I came to the conclusion that life was too short to spend hours on it - and bought a USB soundcard off eBay for less than £2 shipped - for example Uk item number 290366278243, though a search for "USB sound card" will find you thousands of others.
If you take that route, probably best to disable built-in sound in the BIOS to avoid any confusion...0 -
try the download from one of these instead

Hi fwor,
Thank you for your input.
You are right that life is too short. I have spent the weekend with my darling computer :-)
I think I would like a more elegant solution but I will bear in mind your idea.
Thank you
Hi Roy47,
I tried both of your downloads - thank you.
The first one, my internet security that normally works away quietly was going daft. Although, I told Eset to accept, it wouldn't and the download kept failing.
The second one from Filehorse. I tried twice but it kept coming up with errors.
Unable to launch setcdfmt.exe
and the second time was "alcxwdm.cat not found.
Thank you for your input Roy.
Hi Bod1467,
I came across the Packard bell forum post yesterday but Packard Bell didn't seem to like my pc details. I got the impression it was too old.
Unless i was not in the right place :-)
Thank you for your help :-)
Hi TakeThis,
I hope I have this right;

Hi,
I have just noticed up the side of the pc is "imedia"
I don't know how to find the model number.
Going into properties it gave me the above info Packard Bell Intel Pentium 4cpu2.
Thanks
An old invoice shows it is a Imedia Model 5061.
I've just been onto Packard Bell Support again and the site just doesn't know my serial number or model number - too old I guess. :-)0 -

It's a long shot, but you could try the audio driver for this board.0
