    I thought you had a load of photos on it you wanted to save.

    It's a 5 minute job to fit a hard drive inside a PC. It's easier than wiring a 13A plug. Loads of videos on YouTube on how to do it - take a look.

    i may have a go at it tomorrow.. but why would it work fitted into the pc and not plugged into usb ?

    The electronics inside the enclosure are entirely separate, in effect giving you two or even three potential points of failure to investigate if the USB port on the computer itself is counted.

    And if you do decide to discard the drive, don't just throw it away - take it apart and smash it to bits first.
