hi guys.. i have a seagate barracuda drive out of a dell pc which the motherboard has recently failed so it was scrapped but the hardrive has alot of photos on which we need to save (this is my mums machine) i have a spare hardrive in a case plugged into my tv so i removed it and wired up the seagate but my dell running win7 installs it and shows it in my comp but its not readable, if i click on it it just freezes my pc up . so i tried my wifes laptop which is vista and the same problem..i then plugged it into my transformer prime and that shows it but with only some files on which seem to be just a few files from the dell part of the hardrive.. anyone got any ideas ? thx

Make a bootable cd/usb with Hiren's boot tools and use one of its recovery/disk tools to provide more information, have you configured the barracuda drive as slave if you are putting it in a pc with a master boot drive?

If it's a IDE disc, check how the jumpers are set. it's possibly set as master - it needs to be set as slave. How do I add a signature?0

my old pc hardrive that i have fitted in a hdd enclosure is plug and play straight into my pc so i presumed this hardrive fitted to the enclosure would be the same ! has all the same terminals etc...0

Not necessarily, as already stated, if it is set as a master it could cause the issue you're seeing. It could also hang the machine and in some circumstances corrupt data on the genuine master drive (as the PC will see two masters and not know which is the true one)How do I add a signature?0

ah i follow now.. it surely will be master.. what is the easiest way to set it to slave..thx for quick replies guys0

Take the drive out of the enclosure and look at the end where the cable plugs in.Assuming it's an IDE drive, it will have a ribbon cable roughly 2" wide going into a socket with 39/40 pins. Between this and the power socket will be some more pins, possibly with a small jumper between two of them. Look on the label to find out which pins need to be jumpered to make it a slave (different settings on different drives, some have a jumper for master, not for slave, others are vice versa)
If in doubt, post the full model number of the drive and someone will check. How do I add a signature?0 -
You might be better setting it as Cable Select.................**** I hereby relieve MSE of all legal responsibility for my post and assume personal responsible for all posts. If any Parking Pirates have a problem with my post then contact me for my solicitors address.*****0
