does driving a diesel increase your risk of getting cancer?

The World Health Organisation say that Diesel is carcinogenic.
Obviously exhausts spew out fumes which everybody inhales but does actually driving a diesel increase your risk even more, ie, do any engine fumes enter the car?
I'm just about to buy a 3 or 4 year old zafira and can't decide whether to get a 1.9 diesel or 1.8 petrol. Financially there's not much in it but the diesel is probably the better engine.
Any thoughts?

I would certainly hope not! Although a colleague's did after the mechanic didn't fit the new exhaust to the manifold properly. Had me choking nearly on the way to work...

Go ahead and buy the diesel.

If you're genuinely concerned about cancer, don't smoke, avoid red meat, exercise regularly and act on suspicious symptoms. Don't be unduly concerned by WHO's proclamation.

Unless you, yourself, are following a diesel;)

to the OP providing your exhaust is fit for purpose and you don't drive with the tailgate open the chance of your fumes entering car is most unlikely in normal driving.

As VfM4meplse says there are many more potentially bigger risks that you should mitigate.

Keep off the burnt toast and crispy bacon too:(

I'd be more worried about buying the diesel and buy the petrol-dpf's on these seem to give more trouble than its worth.

Could this be the end of cheap road tax for the current low emission diesel vehicles?
The government are currently reviewing the vehicle excise duty because of the loss of revenue because of the number of low emission cars around, so this may be an ideal excuse to raise taxation on diesel vehicles.

Of course it will increase your risk of cancer, diesel is the fuel of the devil, I suggest running it on chip fat instead, oh no hang on then you may be at risk of obesity.........

I don't think it is just diesels they are worried about there are petrol low emission vehicles and growing numbers of hybrids. If they ran on water they would tax them somehow.

We the consumer never benefit from our moves to more prudent use of anything once it is Government encouraged.

i know someone who died because they had a diesel it was the wall that did it though
i know someone who got dermatitis from diesel handling and it obviously ruined his life
i hate the stuff the smell the fumes the clatter
i seriously do believe its dangerous to your health and all this dolly blue they add to trucks cant be helping either
i much prefer the old 4 star petrol smell on the overun...nectar it was and never did me no harm
