hi
i have a laptop that used to go wireless without any problems.
i have not used it for sometime and now when i went to use it today it wont recognise the router? it is a different one from when i went on it last, so i put the password in. It took the passwork and is telling me im connected but i cant get onto the internet.
i tried with the earthnet cable it seems to do it ok, as soon as i take it out it loses the conection, but still telling me its connected, its driving me mad so any help with this would be gratefully recieved
many thanks

The most common causes are wrong password, wireless switch on the laptop turned off. There are more complex issues, eg its an old laptop that only takes WEP encryption and yr new router is set to WPA, or even new wireless networks around you have are interfering (change channels),
If you tell us about yr new router, what OS is on yr laptop, and the make model of yr laptop, maybe folks may be able to provide more specific advice?0 -
i tried with the earthnet cable
Plug the Ethernet cable back in and see if you can access your router's internal web server. Alternatively, search the exterior for a reset button and consult the [STRIKE]book of armaments[/STRIKE] documentation.
Common addresses:- 192.168.1.254 - BT Home Hub
- 192.168.0.1 - Virgin Super Hub
- 10.0.1.1 - Apple AirPort

It certainly gives one something to do, but if the laptop in question isn't even connecting to the correct network this will likely have no effect.
Thus, another thing to check would be the list of preferred networks. If using Windows Vista or 7, consult this handy guide.0 -
If your laptop is using Vista it's likely to be the router is using WPA2 security, which Vista doesn't like. Change the security mode to the less secure WEP.
Otherwise (particularly if it's Windows 7), make the wireless connection (albeit with no internet access), go to the Network and Sharing Center and look at the active network to see if it there's an icon of a park bench. If so, click on Public Network under the bench and choose Home from the available options. How do I add a signature?0 -

Which is precisely NOT the thing to do as the broadband exchange DLM system will intepret this as "a disconnection" and may, depending on the line's history, mark down the broadband speed.
If you want to switch off/on then recommendation are that you leave it between 5 minutes and 20 minutes to ensure this does not happen.
Personally I've found 5 minutes is OK. However if there is a problem with the PPP session back to the ISP from the exchange hanging then 20 minutes downtime is required for this to be fully cleared out0 -
hi
the computor is with vista it is a compaq but has a hewel packard label on aswell. its quite an up to date computor with a 5 in 1 reader and hdmi with a built in webcam. I have tried rebooting the modem, and would even like to try and restore it back to its factory condition as i have saved what i need of it.
if you are saying i need to change it to a less secure system wep? how i do this, also when i came back on my other laptop there was a message coming up that another computor was trying to access on this ip adress? never had that before
any help would be greatfully received
and many thanks for your replies
thankyou

Regarding the IP address conflict make sure that the IP address on the laptop is not static:
Control panel, network sharing centre. manage network connections (on the left panel), right click on yr wireless network, then on properties, scroll down and highlight tcp/ip(v4) and click on properties at the bottom. Make sure that "obtain IP address automatically" is clicked.0 -
hi
cant see where it say about ip adress, i have done what you say, also, i have a diagram where it has computor--- unidentified network--with a cross then internet is in grey, on my other computor it is coloured
i have used the windows diagnostics and you can click on 'automatically get new ip setting' which i have done, it just says
windows tried a repair but a problem still exsists your modem or router is not available
i have also tried to reset the network adapter and no joy with that either
i am at a loss
cheers jewls0 -
Connect laptop to internet with ethernet cable.
Download SINO.exe from http://artellos.com/sino-page. Disconnect ethernet and turn wifi on and try to re-connect to internet. Run the SINO program just checking 'IPConfig' and Scan. Copy the report txt file contents. Reconnect to internet by ethernet and post contents of txt file on here.604!0
