Just out of curiosity, if I added an SSD to my computer (currently running a 1TB SATA II HDD) and put the O/S on there, how would I remove it (if necessary) from the 1TB drive?
Can I just copy/clone the necessary files over or would I have to reinstall the O/S from scratch onto the new drive?

Definitely would be a reinstall on the SSD. You'd likely be able to just delete the old windows install from the HDD by deleting the folder.

Thanks for that. would all the programs still work as-is or would they need reinstalling to cope with the change of drive letter?

Some may, but it'll very likely be no. When you reinstall your operating system you'll have to reinstall of your software afterwards.

  • Whoa there, Toxteth~me~old~mucker, wait just a cotton-pickin' minute. Tweakers were useful and sometimes essential but dangerous for early adopters .. .. but not now. If anyone needs to use a tweaker, don't, just flash the SSD properly and update the firmware on the drive.

We'll have to agree to disagree but awareness leads to informed choice. I always flash the latest firmware but also use an SSD tweaker or command prompt tweaks. I'm not overly concerned with minimizing writes to prolong life of the disk but more to check uncontrolled filling of available space.

I only have 64GB o/s boot drives and with a clean Win 7 install already taking about 18 GB of that, along with another 20 GB for the Z68 SRT acceleration cache I feel I need to manage it through SSD tweaks. I also use NTFS junctions to larger data disks for the default Windows libraries and .msi installers directory.

Thanks for all the advice, I bought the 256gb Samsung 830 SSD today off Amazon for a sweet price of £145 (down from £339, not sure that's likely but still a good price). Although as you say ebuyer has wierd pricing it says under deals its about £143 but you add it to basket and it's £149.99, so played it safe with Amazon.
As I said at the beginning of the thread, I'm looking to replace my old desktop, but can't afford to all in one go, the idea is to get this SSD in, speed it up a little until I can buy the next bit, which is probably going to be the Case, then PSU, and worry about the processor later, (probably an i5). For now I'll limp on through with the trusty Dell

Good choice mate, you won't regret it! :T But i hope you got the desktop version rather than the laptop one!

The included Samsung Magician utility software is excellent, lets you optimize Windows for the SSD, just bear in mind that SSDs do NOT need defragmentation. Also one thing i love about the 830 series is that you can update the SSD firmware within windows...no need to faff around with bootable CDs or USB drives like with other SSDs

What would be problem with cloning the drive in this case?
