How have you ever been paid before if you've never had a bank account?

Are you on the electoral roll? Do you have a british or european passport? Are you over 18?

Yes to all your questions and I am 26

Hmh. I don't think you have told us the whole story there. Why did you never try for a bank account earlier? Why did you have your salary paid into your girlfriend/friends accounts? You have been an adult for 8 years, and only now do you have a problem opening a bank account?
You will get lots of help here if you tell your whole story but nobody can help you if you don't.

I tried a few times years ago but never had proper ID(passport, drivers licence, provisional, bills). So either stalled or just got turned down but I just put it off and thought I could get one another time. I ended up leaving it for so long thinking it's not that important since I didn't no much about credit and the benefits of banking.

Whilst I was signing on I had a Post Office account which my benefits went into so that was pretty useful as I just took my money out when ever I needed it.When I started working part time I had my job money paid into my girlfriend's account because I couldn't use my post office account.

Another thing. I have only been on the electoral role for a few years now. For some strange reason I was never on it yet everyone in my house hold was. hmmmm

    ...caught?

Given the fairly dodgy financial history you have, that rather needs more explanation. My first thought when calling a bank about a declined application is not "oh god they'll catch me".

May be pop into your nearest Citizens Advice Bureau to discuss your options?

A CAB can probably give you better advice than us on an anonymous internet forum.
