Friend has got a job but 3rd-party company want his last 3 year bank statements ?

Friend of mine got a good VR package a few years ago.
He has since then enjoyed life....playing and watching sport. a bit of travel, etc.
He has paid his mortgage off (long before he got his VR), no dependants, is single, etc. He has only ever received 6 months JSA since he got VR and has not claimed any other JSA payments due to his financial situation (i.e. He wouldn't get any JSA payments).
Anyway he has now been offered a job locally; simply because he needs something to do now to excercise his mind.
However the local company want him to send 36 months worth of bank statements to a 3rd-party company so that they can check his CV. Does anyone know what they are checking ? Is it to make sure that he hasn't been employed since he got VR ?
For info, he has always had to submit yearly tax returns to HMRC due to his financial situation so why can't he refer the 3rd-party company to HMRC to confirm that he hasn't received any employment money and has been unemployed for 3 years ?
He is feeling a little bit peed off having to send his P&C bank statements to this company so any advice would be much appreciated.
Many thanks.

What sort of job is it? If it's something in finance then I can see why they might want to check. He certainly woudn't be able to refer the 3rd party company to HMRC as they would be in breach of the DPA if they revealed his tax details to anyone else.0

Ask how providing bank statements would help them check his CV.0 -
3 years bank statements??
I've worked for financial organizations and the MOD, and I was never asked for that much info.0 -
Some companies insist on a three year background check - if the applicant has not been working for that period, the employer (or the company they outsource the task to) will need to verify what they were living off for this period, hence the request for bank statements. As an alternative they would accept a letter from the JCP, but as the applicant was not claiming JSA this would not be possible.0

What will they do if the bank account shows regular income transferred from another account? Will they want to see that too?
I would ask for an interview with the 3rd party and offer to answer specific questions. Otherwise this is a fishing expedition.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -

I have no idea - I don't know how much depth they go into, only the reason why he has been asked.
I am not aware that any of these companies would offer an interview, they tend to be arms length organisations. What he needs to ask is whether there is another way he can verify what he has been doing for the period in question.0 -

Does he have 3 years worth of statements? Does he think they would actually show he was unemployed?
I have nine current accounts, only two of which have received my salary payments over the last 3 years. From that it would appear I could prove I haven't worked for 3 years, which is far from true.0 -

As I am not the OP, I would not know if he has three years of statements!
All they want to know is what he was living off for the past three years. Anyone can ask their bank for statements if they need to - they simply need to make a DPA request.0 -
Has he applied to be chief executive of one of the big banks? If not then this is totally way over the top, for a job that is just to "exercise his mind".Make £2018 in 2018 Challenge - Total to date £2,1080
