Hi all,
I need to purchase a car for my new job that starts next month. I will be given a £3,000pa car allowance which rises to £6k after 3 months (paid monthly)

the deal is, at present I am not working (claiming JSA) and do not have good credit due to being laid off so have a few late payments.

I know I can afford the payments (£200+ a month) once I start getting a salary, but who could lend me the money in this situation... bank of mum and dad is out of the question... there are loads of car finance companies on-line but I do not trust any of them..
If the world is a stage... I want better lighting!

No reputable lender, including car finance companies, will lend u money for a car if you're not working.

Your only hope is borrowing the £ from a friend or relative. Or speaking to your future employer, explaining the situation and hope that they can help in someway.

why did you accept the job when u knew u neded car and didn't have one, or the funds to buy one?

Is it just to get you to work or from site to site ?

If just to and from work can you nto ask a friend to either drive you to work or you borrow the car ?

Try not to tie yourself into a loan - what will you do if the job doesn't work out?

Remember an employer can now get rid of you (with few exceptions) at any time in the first two years of employment.

Can you sell off any possessions just to raise enough to buy a cheap car or, maybe, even borrow a car short term to see how things work out?

It is to get me from site to site, I will be doing software installs all over the UK. My last job had a car with it, this one get a car allowance. It seems it is catch 22, cannot get finance as I have not worked for 3 months, but will have the money easy to pay for it, as the car allowance is extra to my salary (and my annual salary is £3k higher than my last job as well)..

speak to your employers, they may have a company vehicle that you can use.

I needed a job, and my line of work requires a car, usually you get a company car. Also, if benefit office find out you were offered a good job and refused it, you may lose benefits as well.

This job is right up my street and once I get a car all should be fine. Even a cheap run-around would do me for now, as I will be putting the car allowance in a separate account to cover running costs and to purchase a better car at a later date.

Sounds a tough position to be in re the allowance rather than a straight forward company car.. would echo the other reservations re Job Security, ie if didnt work out and your left with car & payments.. Could you noot look to do a lease for say 12 months so that you can build up to buy a better car later?? as need something reliable over a cheap run-around.. Maybe speak to the employer directly see if they can assist so your not stitching yourself straightaway??

If you've got a few late payments then unlikely that you'll either get a loan or credit card. Best to check your credit report to see what it says.

    Maybe hire one?
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

You say that Bank of Mum and Dad isn't an option.... how about car-hire of mum and dad? Or close mate or sibling?

Borrow the motor, not the money?
