Okay .... used the disc and get as far as a blue screen with
"Windows XP Home Edition Setup
The following list shows the existing partitions and unpartitioned space on this computer.
Use tyhe UP and DOWN ARROW keys to select an item in the list
To set up windows XP on the selected item, press enter.
To create a partition in the unpartioned space, press c
To delete thi selected partion, press D
152626 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR]
-: Partition1 (Elsa utilities)
C: Partition2 (Windows) [NTFS]Partition3 (Store ALL H) [NTFS)
I can only move a bar to highlight one of the above 3 lines and I cannot select R but only the following options ....
ENTER = Install, D=Delete Partition F3=Quit ....0 -
The prompt to use Recovery Console appears on the Welcome to Setup screen which you would have seen BEFORE you reached the point you're at.

I don't get a "welccome to Setup screen".
Once I hit any keys to boot from CD, the screen goes blue with the title "windows setup" then procedes to load all the files which come up at the bottom line on the screen.
It then says "set up is starting windows" followed by "searching for previous versions of microsoft windows" and then only stops on the page in my last post0 -

So you should try a full retail disc instead of the Samsung Recovery disc. Check your inbox.0

Just to check ... I couldn't find my 512KB stick so I am using a 4 GB stick ... would this make a difference ?0 -

As long as you can Format it to FAT32, it might be ok.0
