It would have been interesting to have attempted repair using the Recovery Console on the original problem, just to see if any further files were missing or corrupted,
But a bit too late for that now..

I haven't picked up the external optical drive yet so I am still open to any suggestions. How do you do this if the netbook doesn't boot up and has no disc drive ?

    Whilst waiting for Simplistik's reply.......

Have you attempted to get XP on to the USB drive using the USB Tool? On which OS will you install the USB Tool. Bear in mind you may have to install(as per the instructions) extra software to get it working if you will use an XP machine.
Not a bad idea to get it working if you are resistant to purchasing an optical drive. You may need to reinstall/repair at a later date.
  • My machine is Windows 7. I had a go at the USB method (windows 7 USB/DVD download tool) but that page required me to download additional software giving me 2 extra links. I tried to install the software downloaded from the first link but it would only install to a 64-bit system and I don't seem to have that (32-bit??)

I also tried gone Hiren method as well. Downloaded the first link but I couldn't run it as I was told I did not have full administrator rights. I checked my access and I am down as my system's administrator !!!!!

I then thought I would try the optical drive route. My brother has one but he's just trying to find gone power cable.

You should not need the extra software if you are using Windows 7.

Just right click on the setup file and choose 'Run as Administrator'

If after installation the ISO image is not accepted(quite likely), use RUFUS to create a bootable USB Drive.

Insert the USB drive, run RUFUS and choose the option to make a bootable USB drive from an ISO image and then navigate to your XP image.

    Example:

I have stand-alone versions. The XP Recovery Console is fairly limited, but good enough to extract a System file from Compressed Windows Files and replace it on the System.

But you are well past that point now,
Good luck with it, Hope you get it sorted soon..

Working on different problems for different people at the same time got me confusing one job with another. :)

You should be able to fix this with the SRS Admin Tool.

Do nothing until you hear from me.:)

    But firstly, try this:

Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD in to the external optical drive.
Reboot the computer, as the computer is starting you should see a message to press any key to boot from the CD. When you see this message press any key.
In the Microsoft Windows XP setup menu press the R key to enter the recovery console.
Select the operating system you wish to fix, and then enter the administrator password.
    Type expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32
You will then be prompted if you wish to overwrite the file type Y and press enter to overwrite the file.
Type exit to reboot the computer.
