Your machine will only 'see' 4 GB of that because it is only 32-bit.
    We know. ;)

32-bit Win 7 won't use much RAM above 3GB anyway.

Win7 will use up 3.51GB of the 4GB, using the rest for hardware addressing.
  • I still happily use XP also. Not a stick in the mud, I've used Win7 and do have an old hdd with a clean install stashed away for emergencies, but to be honest I don't much see the point of upgrading other than the technical differences if it's something your hardware requires, such as memory addressing & whatnot which only come into play at the higher end of capabilities.
Hell, my distinctly average rig barely had to sweat running any productivity software since I used to mod 3D games & I was running a 3D modeller, photosphop, goldwave & the game engine simultaneously.

It looks a shade nicer for sure, but functionally, it makes no real difference to me, it's just an OS to run the programs & manage the files that actually do mean something to me.
I still use my computer to do all the same stuff, and for years now I've not had to struggle running any productivity software

Time will force me to change at some point but It'll probably only be the inability to get driver support or essential software that won run under 32-bit that gets me to upgrade permanently, we might well be into Win8 or 9 by that time & I'm fine with that.

If I go down the road of adding extra Ram if unsuccessful with drivers etc can I just add one slot with 4GB, will that effect anything to much and do I need to get DDR2? I notice its more expensive than DDR3. Many Thanks

A DDR3 SO-DIMM has four extra pins; it wouldn't fit in the slot.

Yep, that's my philosophy too, although it'll be the withdrawal of security updates that will eventually make me change. Hopefully, in the next couple of years, vendors will have woken up to the emergence of Ubuntu as a viable alternative and will be writing the appropriate software for their drivers.

This should provide sufficient incentive. :)

Hmm... can't say I'm happy about having my quotes altered. I deliberately specified Ubuntu because I do not think that any of the other Linux distros are currently viable for 'the masses'. Lucid Puppy and Zorin OS Lite can drive neither my printer nor 3G dongle 'out of the box'. Lubuntu can't either, but Ubuntu Desktop can.

I wasn't certain that the OP had posted that just to show that the machine had more than one RAM slot.

Not sure if it's a good example of the breed any more - they've been messing around with alternative Window managers.

IDK what that means, but if it's still free then frankly, I don't care :)

Anyway, there's plenty more distros in the sea.....

Ever wondered why so few distributions look alike? They're all using different desktop environments. On top of creating installers for various package managers software developers also need to know where and how to place shortcuts so non-nerds can actually use their applications.

Unfortunately the very nature of the system precludes any concerted attempts at standardisation; nobody can agree on anything.
