Win 95 then :rotfl::rotfl:Posting this on a netbook with 2GB memory. I wish I had my old "pocket" IBM/370 with me running MVS 5 times under VM/SP on how much ram oh yes 8MB and about 200 users, things just ain't what they used to be.:p

!!!!!! comment is that ? ... I cut my teeth on DEC Alpha's running VMS and IBM AS400s

My qualifying comment was a means of explaining I'm not just a layman talking with no experience of the matter.

The OP asked for performance on his Win 7 install comparable to his XP install.... and with 2GB of RAM he won't get that.

The only way you'll get hold of XP legally is via a technet subscription.

I'm interested to know what your think the right amount of ram etc is correct for Win 7 and what your laptop spec is ?
You can easily get genuine XP media and/or licence keys, eg. via ebay or computer fairs.

Sometimes the TechNet ones can be a bit picky about which key/media set combination they will work with.

    .

Funny... M$ stopped selling XP quite a while ago.

Re-selling media/licence keys isn't legal according to the T&C of M$, but heyho.

Cuts to Wiki cos it's quicker http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_System/370
That of course is what I used when I had teeth to cut :D If only you were born then you would have reminisce the days when programmers were real men and saving 64 bytes was an achievement , these days because memory and processor power is cheap they tend to "not give a damn".
Oh and 2GB is more than adequate for W7 , and the OP has installed his own system it won't have the bloatware from PC manufacturers.

@dx052 you say it is slow and you have wifi problems ...
is it slow as in when running the Internet or running lots of applications e.g. Word + Browser + Spreadsheet + Music + Picture editing all at once?

@debitcardmayhem: The programs seems to open up quite quickily, however things like downloading from the web seem to be very slow. Some web pages open in a heartbeat others can drag its heels a bit. I take on board that my RAM may be a shortfall. I try not to have too much crap on my laptop as I spend a lot of time on it.

ah now I understand... an ageist condescending troll as well.

Yes the 370 was announced 10 years before I was born.... but I'm not stuck in my ways to not understand that the capabilities of software/hardware is now so far advanced, that what is done now wasn't available 30 years ago. I do also know the history of computing before I was born and have used system older than me. So cut the condescending rubbish. Those in the field would understand your "win95" insult.

There are still systems ops/programmers out there that eeek every bit of performance out of modern hardware, just as much as yester year would. However, they usually work with embedded devices or super computer/multi node arrays.

And you are still missing the OPs point. He wants the SAME performance from his Win 7 install as he got with his XP install, which he just won't get with the same spec hardware.

Or using the same attitude you have come over with.... but your glasses on old man and re-read the OPs first post.

I didn't know I had to upgrade all the drivers! I will have a go at that now.

I am assuming I do this via device manager?

Windows might be able to find the odd driver for you, but for best results you're better off going to the source.

    If the hat fits......

Try not to come on to a thread immediately insulting someone who is trying to help the OP.
