If savings rates were at 10%, what rate do you think banks might charge for mortgages? It seems to me that the social consequences would be unthinkable.
My first mortgage in 1990 was 15.9%

Yeah but salaries back then could buy more. Full Fact state from 1990-2020 house prices quadrupled whilst salaries have only tripled: https://fullfact.org/online/house-prices-1990-2020/
Unsure if the higher interest rates in 1990 balances this out when comparing to now! If anyone has more analysis on this, I'd be interested to read it.

And you could claim tax relief of the interest paid

Marcus's ISA is up to 2.8% this morning.

Good news for those who want an 20-minute instant access Cash ISA with monthly interest. Not flexible though, but I prefer my emergency funds to be available that quickly just in case!

Newcastle's 3.05% triple access ISA no longer available.
  • Trying to open a Barclays current account, if you're a new customer, is an impossible nightmare! At the beginning of this month I went into my local branch (the only one around for 12 miles) and tried to open an account, in the hope of then opening a 4% ISA. They booked me an appointment for April, which I now cannot keep, so I opened an account via their website, just over a week ago. Today I got a letter saying that I needed to take ID into the bank, which I duly did this lunchtime. Again, they couldn't see me and promised to call me later. This hasn't happened, so I read their website more thoroughly and realised that I could open a current account via their phone app. This I did, provided all of the ID, together with a video, got to the end and yes, you guessed, I have to take the same ID into the bank! I phoned their helpline and although the lady I spoke to was very helpful, she couldn't get any appoinment at any of the 4 banks within a 15 mile radius. She went as far as August and still couldn't do it! Amazing, I've never come across such a painful way to open an account before and I'm 71 years old!!!

I'm a bit new to all this money saving lark but, for reasons of bereavement, have found myself dealing with several financial institutions this last year - all relating to ISAs.
I too find it somewhat nightmarish and it's not helped by the fact that they all seem to have their own rules and regulations - yet I'm just trying to achieve the same end with all.
I'm afraid I have to concur with you @jacegirl - Barclays, unfortunately were without doubt the most crackers of all.
I did manage to get a face to face appointment (booked it in November - attended it in January) so I could sit and watch someone else fill in an online form for which, I was providing the answers.
I did ask her why Barclay's wouldn't let me do this myself but she didn't know - and I fully appreciate it was not her fault.
The final piece of madness came when I had to sit with my passport open, holding it up to my face, while she took my photograph! - never happened before or since - what is that all about?
So, Barclays - nil points - my 12 points are awarded to Secure Trust Bank - all done and dusted in record time, no fuss, no faff.
  • The Newcastle BS Triple Access Cash ISA (issue 4) that was paying 3.05% is no longer available.

Just noticed a 3-year fixed rate ISA at Skipton at 4.20% AER with a deposit/transfer window until 22/03/2023... worth opening empty as and holding as an option for now if a 3-year fix is of interest...
Given the time period, and having almost jumped too soon on a number of good-then-bad-now fixes this year, I've decided I prefer the 3 year M&S ISA at 4%. It's just slightly less, but the penalty is a flat £100 which, on a large balance, I can easily write-off if rates rise above this level at any time over the next 3 years.

I agree. The £100 penalty is equivalent to 90 days on a £10k balance but 45 days on £20k, 30 days on £30k and so on. The best in the market I would say.
Does anybody have any experience with them and can comment on their customer service and timeframes? I applied online on Monday and haven't heard anything yet. They did say they'd action it withing 5 working days but just wondering
