Found a ring what should I do ?

I found a bike once parked outside the back gate of my student house. I took it into our yard for safety and pinned a note to the gate inviting the owners to knock on our door to reclaim it. After three days, I took it to the police station.
After 45 days, they told me the bike was now mine as no-one claimed it! I used it lots to get around Uni.
If you follow the process, you can have a clear conscience of doing the right thing.0 -
If it's not claimed within 4 weeks, it's yours to sell. Old rings do well.cottonhead wrote: »Thanks everyone. I was thinking of the police option above the rest b ut just didnt know if they would put 2 and 2 together.
No way would I keep the ring. I believe that rings keep hold of feelings ( weird maybe) and wouldnt want something that came from a violent reltionship! Anyway it looks old and so might be an old family ring and even if they are not together it might mean something.
Off to the police station it is ! Thanks .0 -
Well I handed the ring in to the police and feel better now! Sure enough they said I can have it back in 6 weeks if its not collected. Its a very pretty ring but no way could I wear it. If its collected that would be a happy ending and if I get it back and sell it I guess thats good too.
Now onto the next neighbour issue....... nextdoors door has been open since 6am this morning..... no car outside and no reply when I knocked and shouted..... dont want to slam the door in case I lock them out - perhaps they left it on the latch as they lost the keys....... would feel terrible if something bad happended though ! Whats going on round here ?!0 -
LOL I did that several times in my old house. Took some stuff out to the car meaning to go back inside, then just got in the car and went to work! My neighbour had the same dilemma as you... in the end she pulled the door to but didn't shut it.
Glad you sorted the ring, that's what I would have done.0 -

Years ago, I came home and found a note on my hall floor from the local police asking me to contact them. It turned out that my neighbour had been in touch with them as she had seen my front door wide open and no car on the drive and no answer when she shouted into the house. The police just wanted to make sure that I hadn't been burgled or anything worse, luckily I could reassure them that everything was ok.
I'd put my DD in the car and just driven off, forgetting to close the front door. I was lucky, no-one been in but I was very grateful to my neighour and was very careful to make sure I didn't do it again!
To be honest OP, if the door is still wide open at this time, I would contact the police & explain what you've posted here,. I'm sure you'd feel awful if you did nothing & something was seriously wrong.0 -
Yeah its starting to worry me a bit as its getting late. Might go and investigate again in a bit.0

Ring the non-emergency numer (101?) and they'll probably send a bobby round to check.Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily Dickinson

Sorry I gave slightly wrong info cottonhead, I did check on the W Mids police site first, quote "entering the details of the find on the computer will explain the mandatory retention period of 4 weeks" So it must vary between forces.
As to the open door, I would notify the police as if it were a crime scene, the last thing to do is tramp all over it. Don't ring emergency but the local number, found on the web.
I hope you let us know the end to the ring story.0 -
you have done the right thing in going to the police.
I was in a similare position last year where someone handed in my very expensive ring. It was an unexpected shock but a very pleasant on where you see humanity lives on.
Well done for going to the police.

I would explain about the argument, and the physical violence you witnessed. Its obviously not an emergency, but non emergency bobbies can take all night sometimes to come and suss a situation out and it might give them a bit of gogo juice- don't just explain about the open door!Society always tramples down on those that are different. Abnormalities are smoothed over. I strive to be a wrinkle.0
