Found a ring what should I do ?

A few days back two neighbours walked past me having an argument and one punched the other. Then about 100 meteres along the road I found a ring on the pavement. Im guessing maybe she through it down in temper but I may be wrong, perhaps it isnt hers. Next day police and ambulance came to their house.
I picked up the ring so nobody would steal it but have been debatng what to do. Should I knock on the door and ask them if its theirs or take it to the police. If I do take it to the police should I remain anonymous and should I explain I think I know who may own it?
I dont want to cause any embarassment to them or start up another problem as I dont know their situation or how they may react. Id hate to be the cause of more trouble.

I'd put a notice up in the street saying ring found and ask anyone who thinks they lost it to provide a description and if nobody turns up after a week or so I would take it to the police. If nobody claims it in a certain amount of time I believe it comes back to you.Debts Jan 2014 £20,108.34

I would just take it straight to the police. You say that the police have already been in contact with the couple, so they may put 2 and 2 together and trace it back to the owners, or the couple may have made up and go to the police in search of it.
Admitting you have the ring by putting a sign up could encourage all sorts of nuisance. Would you really want some chancers contacting you to ty and get their hands on a ring? You could have all sorts of people at your door.
If it was me I really wouldn't want to get involved, especially if I had seen signs of violence.0 -
Take it to the police, they will already have an incident number for the couple at their address and your information about the argument might be helpfull to their enquires.
Be sure to get a receipt for the ring in case it does not belong to the couple and if it does then they don't need to know that it was you that handed it in.0 -
Hmmm difficult one, if you take it to the police station, I very much doubt the police would trace the owners for it but they will wait and see if the owners call/drop in and see if it has been handed in. If over a period of time it hasn't been collected then you can keep the ring (even though you probably wouldn't want it).
The other option is to go round and ask them, I know you won't want to get involved but if they have thrown it in temper, they have probably been back out since to look for it, my mum lost her engagement ring years ago and is still distraught about it.Married 1st October 2015:heartpuls

I would take it to the police and explain when and where you found it, advising them that you think it may have something to do with these people.
Job done, it's up to the police then to find out if it was these peoples or not.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

Unless of course you were hoping to keep it.If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
Hand it in to the police and pop a note through the couples door stating that the ring is in the cop shop.I'm not that way reclined
Jewelry? Seriously? Sheldon you are the most shallow, self-centered person I have ever met. Do you really think that another transparently-manipu... OH, IT'S A TIARA! A tiara; I have a tiara! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me!0 -
It may be nothing to do with this couple. Therefore just hand it into the police, stating where you found it and nothing else.0

Sell it (No one ever say's that) But take it to police saying where you found it, but police wont be rushing to reunite it with the owner.0

Thanks everyone. I was thinking of the police option above the rest b ut just didnt know if they would put 2 and 2 together.
No way would I keep the ring. I believe that rings keep hold of feelings ( weird maybe) and wouldnt want something that came from a violent reltionship! Anyway it looks old and so might be an old family ring and even if they are not together it might mean something.
Off to the police station it is ! Thanks .0
