As you've not booked yet why not consider somewhere else in Europe. Dublin is very expensive and I personally found it over rated. Find a cheap flight to somewhere in Europe where you can afford to eat out and buy drinks.

I have stayed several times at the Croke Park hotel and it is very nice. As the name hints, it is next to Croke Park (Google it). It is a 15-20 minute walk into the town during the day and a short taxi ride back at night. Lovely big rooms, super service and nice food.
If that is at the top of you budget (search comparison hotel sites), look at Maldron Hotel Parnell Square. Very nice budget hotel, 5 minutes walk to centerof things. If you have an early flight home, think of staying at a hotel near the airport, they offer a lift to airport, try Crowne Plaza Dublin Northwood.
Really nice and with a good bar! They offer transport to airport.

As for things to see and do. Need to know what sort of trip it is. Shopping? Sightseeing? Interested in Irish history/old buildings/tours etc.

I know Dublin reasonably well, if I can help, just ask.

Take plenty euros, really expensive but a great place.

Jurys Inn is very central, and not too expensive.

Have also stayed in Fleet St Hotel, Temple bar - cheap and very basic/old fashioned rooms but right in the middle of the touristy bit.

Lynams, Oconnell st - cheap, again basic old fashioned but clean and in the middle of the 'main' street.

Stayed in a few outwith city centre but you really should stick to the centre.

Temple bar is the tourist bit, there are lots of 'irish bars' but all are aimed at tourists so if that's what you want be prepared to pay a lot. Harcourt Street has more bars which aren't as touristy and are cheaper.

What kind of break are you looking for and I will give more info.

Ie, are you a drinker, age group, what kind of places do you like to eat, taking children, want to go sightseeing etc?

Good tips from con1888 but Temple Bar is really 'naff'! Even as a young man (lot of year ago) it was not somewhere I would fancy going. Full of Stag/Hen do's. Lots of real Irish bars elsewhere. Have a look at the Dublin Forum on https://www.tripadvisor.com. Ask the regulars on there for ideas. Some real nice helpful folk to advise you.

I would agree but find a lot of tourists seem to like it. I don't really consider myself as a tourist when in Dublin now due to the amount of times I go and I go with my friends who live there.

I love Dublin but it's really expensive. Was there in October and spent £400 euros in 3 days, on drinks and fast food only, no expensive places.

What a strange response. I'm sure if the poster wanted to go elshwhere in europe they wouldn't have asked for advice on dublin:p
Lots of places are expensive, and dublin no more so than many others.
Have you been to any scandanavian country recently?

I'm sure several of us thought the same as you but you put your thoughts into words. Well done.

Dublin expensive? I admit it's not 'cheap' but worth it imo.

We have been twice now and stayed in temple bar both times. Ok so potentially a bit naff but still good for a few drinks. It's easy to get about there as it is pretty central. We stayed at the temple bar hotel first and paramount 2 nd time. 2 adults both stays under £200 for 3 nights. Both hotels were fine- nice rooms, and surprisingly smart, potential for noise but we weren't disturbed. Tesco express handy and some lovely restaurants within walking distance. Drinks are pricy- around 12 euros for our 2 drinks. We ate well, nice restaurants and found some good set menu type places including Frankie detories place and never paid more than 60 for 3 courses and drinks which is comparably fair. There are obviously cheaper still. We went to Guinness storehouse first and recommend it- even for mon Guinness drinkers like us- the views are great. We also really enjoyed the zoo and walk around Phoenix park where there is a lovely cafe by the way.

We stayed at the Maldron Hotel last year and found it clean and convenient.
I would recommend the hop on hop off bus city tour - saves you walking miles !, seem to remember we had a ticket for 2 days.
We did find the Temple Bar area quite expensive but worth it for the experience.
