Can I use my Belkin router with Sky broadband??

I am thinking of transfering my broadband from Pipex to Sky.

I have a top of range Belkin router which I'd like to continue making use of. Sky suggest that their Netgear box has been modified for specific use with its broadband.

Will my belkin router work?

    It's not impossible but it would no doubt break Sky's terms and conditions. see skyuser for lots more info.

    As a rule of thumb, routers come in two flavours: DSL and ADSL. You need one when your broadband is supplied via a telephone line, the other when it comes by cable.

    I assume you have a Belkin ADSL Modem/router and not just a straight forward router. In which case, the ADSL modem part will not work with Sky broadband and so you will have to use the Sky supplied box. However, the router part should work with the Sky box if you need to do this.

    On the other hand, if you have a Belkin router (and you have a separate ADSL modem), the router should still work with whatever Sky give you.

    I had a Belkin router and switched to SKY. I couldn't get it to work at all. The Netgear router SKY give out free is every bit as good as the Belkin was. The Netgear comes pre-programmed for SKY with modified software and that's why the Belkin won't work.

    The skyuser site mentioned above will point you in the right direction to flash the router for details required to get the Belkin working. It's all too technical for me though.
  • Initially you need to use the Sky router because the username and password details are embedded into that router and Sky won't give them to you. You can then extract those details and use whatever router you want.
    The true cost of something is what you give up to get it.

    I think that you have misunderstood. Other routers can be used but the username/password needs to be recovered from the Netgear router that Sky provide, so that you can enter it into your own.

  • I am having the same issue and want to know the same as well as I have the mimo equipment as well and want to keep using it as its very stable.

    Has anyone actually tried this yet?

    I seem to recall checking this beforehand via their technical support and remember vaguely that its not a problem as they gave me the settings. I explained why first though and that I can configure myself I just need the settings.

    Now I have their router through I can't find the settings I wrote down.

    You can find your Sky username / password here.

    Open the netgear.cfg file with notepad and you'll see your details similar to this ~
    username= ************@skydsl
    password= **********

    There are a lot of Sky routers on ebay which suggests people are keeping their old routers and disposing of the freebie.
