When I was a trainee mechanic we took a front strut off and I was told to take the shock out. I undid the nut on top of the shock, the spring and holding plate flew off, just missed my head and hit the roof :eek::o

The shine on gloss is actually the oil base dried out, giving a protective, water proof coat, if you sand that off the wood becomes absorbent again
