To be clear, the only way you can't go over is with PAYG or a capped contract.

Ordinary sim-only has no restriction - other than if the network gets suspicious or worried and that is likely to be well over £100.

Thanks for all your replies, some great advice. I never thought about capping or fixed sims and understand the need for it.

If you have a no contract sim does this mean once the minutes/data has been used you cannot go over and be charged extra?

I'm going to have a look at all the suggestions, thanks for making it easier for me

With giffgaff, goodybags are valid for a month, but once the minutes on the goodybag expire, you cannot make more calls unless you have credit in your account (apart from the free giffgaff to giffgaff calls). However, you can still use the unlimited internet (which you can use for free Skype calls) and texts.

From 20th June, you can set up goodybags to autorenew (instead of having to go online to buy one once a month), but they will only renew at the end of the month when the old one expires, so all the benefits of a contract, but no tie in, no notice period and no risk of running up bills.

The only capped contract options are Tesco and T-Mobile's YouFix options, or any PAYG service.

Three do as well. Set it up, then call 333 and ask to cap it.

With '3' I wouldn't rely on a phone call and would insist on a confirmation in writing. Far too many stories about '3' promising to cup, failing to do this and then blaming the customer.

    Information about Three's Spending Cap

Do not rely on Three's "spending cap" feature - as grumbler says there are plenty disgruntled folk on here that have expressed issues they've run in to. If you click on the above link, even three themselves say "...we can't guarantee a zero spending cap will always work." At least they admit it I suppose.

I stand by my original statement, T-mobile's YouFix, Tesco Fixed Monthly Bill or any PAYG service are your options to be sure to avoid an unexpected bill.

I changed provider from T-mobile to three, as they had much better deals. I'm on a rolling pay monthly contract, which I would not advise for your son.

Have you thought about paying a little more? I'm getting my daughter a PAYG sim only deal; 300 mins, 3000 texts, plus all you can eat data £15. I would not trust her with pay monthly.

There is a cheaper option, but to my mind is inadequate.

I recently got an Orange 12-month SIM-only deal with 300 mins, unlimted texts and 500MB data per month. The list price was £15.50/mo, but Orange had a £5/mo discount promotion running, and Quidco were giving £80 cashback. So all in all, that works out at £3.83 a month (a 75% discount)...

The only downside is that Orange charge 35p/min to access your voicemail (so I just disabled it).

Not sure if the offer is still available...

Bit of advice from a mother of 4 teenagers ALWAYS go for the provider that offers UNLIMITED TEXTS anything else is pointless, because if their credit/mins run out they can still always text.
Also check which is best for signal in your area, probably doesnt matter if your in a big town or city but here in Dorset country side we found that certain providers are crap for signal, always loosing it just when you need it.My lot have always had either T-Mobile or 02 but always unlimited text.

Tesco are doing a 24 month contract with a basic phone and 250mins, 5000 texts & 500Mb for £7.50 month. As others have said, you can cap the account at whatever you want. You don't have to use the phone, you could put the SIM in something else.
