Ok Im now at the windows update stage and have encountered a problem.

It wont let me run a Windows update as it says it cannot check for updates as the service is not running and to restart the computer. I have already restarted and I still can not do an update.

    Any advice?

So you are ignoring my advice. :) I suggested that you make Recovery Disc and to run a Factory Restore.

That way you know that you know that you are updating a clean machine.

you might want to copy those pictures somewhere else for safety, and do the same virus scan/ hijackthis log on your other machine if you haven't done it.
