Malwarebytes: download from malwarebytes.org and install any updates, then tell it to run a full scan - it will take between 1 and 2 hours but you should be able to continue using the machine in the meantime, and it's very good at finding things your antivirus may miss.
Remove anything it finds(worst case scenario is you'd have to reinstall a couple of webgames or a toolbar) and then either buy it or use the free version once a week if possible - update, full scan, remove.
If you want to do a restore, there are several ways but it depends on the make of your machine.

I dont know how to do a factory restore and I dont know what Service Pack one is.
I have nothing really on the laptop as it has never really worked right so I kept on using my old laptop.
Seriously, don't bother with any of these scans, especially if you have no data to keep.
Look here
If you have a couple of blank DVD discs around, choose the first link(Create a set of operating system recovery discs) and follow the instructions. Create the discs and then put them somewhere safe.
Then you can move on to the second link. You can choose to recover without backing up your files.
If you don't have any discs to hand, then move on to the second link, Restore the PC to its original condition with the HP Recovery Manager.
Once completed, go to Start > All Programs > Windows Updates and keep 'Checking (and installing) for Updates' until no more are offered.0 -
The only thing in this laptop is my photos. I already saved them to a memory stick.
I have completed all the scans requested and everything seems to be working fine now. Hopefully it will stay like this for a while!!
Thanks again for all your help.0 -
Does that mean that you will ignore my advice?0

Ok Im now at the windows update stage and have encountered a problem.
It wont let me run a Windows update as it says it cannot check for updates as the service is not running and to restart the computer. I have already restarted and I still can not do an update.

Second one with this issue in as many days.
Go to this folder
c:\windows\softwaredistribution\datastore\logs\
rename edb.log as edb.old
(If you have hide file extensions for know file types enabled, the file will be edb without a file type)
then attempt to run Windows update againHow do I add a signature?0 -
