Calling all IT smarts..

Options
Hi guys,

I currently have a Dell Inspiron laptop but it's running a bit slow. It's about 4 years old now so looking to upgrade it.

I use the laptop for general internet browsing, iTunes, and photos. I do have an external hard drive also which I store a lot of my photos on (I take a lot..!)

I am being recommended a Sony Vaio but they are running up quite pricey in stores. I don't really want to spend any more than ~£500.

I have seen this on the Sony Vaio clearance website:
https://outlet.sony.co.uk/shop/VAIO-Clearance/E-Series-14-15-17/VPCEH3C5184W.CEK

Thoughts? I really don't get this whole i5/i7 processor stuff! I just want one that can run quickly and does what I need it to do!

Thanks in advance :)

If all your doing is internet browsing and Itunes that will be fine.

You could likely get away with a cheaper laptop if that is really all you do with it.

That said, that is a fairly good deal.

If that's all you're doing, then your current laptop should be fine.
Have you tried working through the speed-up sticky at the top of this forum?

I'd like to upgrade my computer anyway.

What is the difference between i3/i5/i7? Is it something that is going to effect me a lot?

    I did find this one..

But it is a B960 instead of an i? Confusssssing!

The different processors have different speeds/performance

    Compare them here

If you really want to know there is information about Intel core processors here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Core

However, it's unlikely that you would need more than an i3 for what you are doing, and an i5 or i7 is going to cost more. The B960 is a Pentium processor, so the previous generation (but probably still prefectly adequate if the price is right).

Sony is a good make, but you pay a premium for the name.

If you've been happy with the Inspiron, look for another DELL

To be fair, the Sony ones are just as expensive as the Dell ones! :)

That depends on what you're comparing.

Both will sell laptops in similar price ranges, but you need to compare the specifications (as far as you can). Look at processor, hard disk capacity, amount of RAM etc.

Upgrading your RAM, cleaning the HDD, etc will probably yield more benefit for less than the cost of a new one...

    whats the current spec?
