Why would a Landlord want to take care of the council tax ?
If he/she is renting out a property then he/she will either want students ( no council tax) or professionals ( who work and therefore pay council tax )
If you move into a property with other students and you are working you should inform the council and pay your council tax bill like everyone else.
In the example you quote IE £1121 minus 25% ( £280 ) you would pay £841 for the year or about £84 a month out of your income.
So £20 a week for council tax because you are working!

Yes - as long as it is full time.

I was a postgrad when my employed girlfriend (now wife) moved in. grumble grumble.

Why? Well I think with some types of properties, e.g. HMOs, the landlord is required to pay the Council Tax (which I suppose is paid for by higher rents to the tenants).

And yes, it is bloody mad that you can be only one of 5 people in a house and because you work you are suddenly lumped with the CT bill for the whole house! It's madness, but like you say, this is the real world and there's a lot that's unfair or illogical.
