Item not as described, what now?

I don't buy clothes from private sellers for this reason - too many disappointments, and if something doesn't work right it's probably the case I ought not to prolong the agonies or let hope triumph over experience.
It's a shame for people like Hermum that some people spoil it for the rest, but I'd rather know the quality and the fit of the item before I buy it - it's nothing personal."Well, it's election year, Bill, we'd rather people didn't exercise common sense..." - Jed Bartlet, The West Wing, season 4

Unfortunately there isn't a way around it, they can't enforce a seller to refund return postage. Ebay will sometimes offer a no fault refund where you don't need to send it back & they refund you, or send a returns label.
A few people on the forum say that they will no longer buy from private sellers because of it. Which is a shame, I sell privately & if I made a mistake on a listing I'd refund the return p&p, after I'd got it back.
All you can do is leave appropriate feedback & stars, never be tempted to threaten bad FB, as that can be removed if the seller takes it to ebay.
Sometimes I buy through ebay but other times I do not. The latest item was a record bought on discogs which was described as near mint (vinyl and sleeve) but arrived with a sleeve that was split on all sides and badly marked. The seller just gets away with it. PayPal say that I must return it by tracked postage at my own expense but this just isn't fair as it will cost nearly as much to do this as the record cost in the first place.
To me it seems that all these online sites that use PayPal favour the sellers and it is why I am ceasing to use them now. The buyer has very few rights and is expected to be out of pocket paying for expensive, tracked, return postage.
It's fine saying you can leave negative feedback for these people but then they leave bad feedback for you. Lies but there's little you can do. The con artists win all round.0 -
Sellers cannot leave negative feedback for buyers. You can leave negative feedback quite safely.0

You say that Paypal always favours the seller, I guess you don't sell. Other than the returns postage Paypal always go in favour of the buyer.
They can't enforce the seller paying for return postage as Paypal haven't "handled" that part of the transaction. I know it's unfair.0 -

I was talking about on Discogs, where I am having my current problem, not on ebay. You are right about ebay but, sadly, on Discogs ,sellers can and do leave negative feedback if you complain about them.0 -

Yes, I do sell but I sell honestly so I never have any problems.
My last PayPal issue found in favour of the seller as I refused to return the item at my own cost (due to the fact that if I used the tracked postage PayPal insist on it would cost nearly as much as the item did). This is not the first time this has happened so, yes, I would say PayPal favours the seller as they expect ripped off buyers to lose more money in returning the item.0 -

Or they found in your favour *if* you returned the item. IE, they found in favour of you for the dispute, but because you didn't return, the dispute closed in the seller's favour. A BIG difference.0 -

As I keep saying, I fail to see why I should lose as much money as the item cost because a seller lies, this happens quite often and it is a major fault with PayPal.
PayPal refused to discuss the matter and simply said they had found in favour of the seller as I would not pay for an expensive tracked return and then they closed the case.
Are you honestly sympathizing with lying sellers? I asked PayPal several times why I should pay out money because of a con artist and they just kept sending the same standard reply that the case was found in the sellers favour as I would not send the parcel back at my own cost.
I am posting this as I want people to know that for cheap items, it is pointless complaining as you will have to pay for expensive, tracked, return postage and PayPal do not give a damn.0 -

Paypal won't discuss as their rules are clear. They found in your favour but you failed to return, therefore the case was SETTLED in the sellers favour. If you don't return WHY should a seller pay out?
Why is the seller a con artist. Why am I unsympathetic? I didn't realise I had given my opinion.
Perhaps, had you posted on here, the advice may have been to file a dispute by Ebay. Ebay have and will give postage refunds (not in all instances), vouchers or even ask a buyer to dispose of an item (no fault refund).0 -

I was quite happy to return, I told the seller and PayPal that several times they didn't want to know unless I paid the return postage that is nearly as much as the cost of the item. I have no interest in keeping rubbish that is not fit for purpose. All I want to do is return the item, at the lying seller's cost, and get all my wasted money back. Where did I say that I wanted to keep the item and get a refund?
Some sellers are con artists (on more than one occasion) because they lie about the condition of an item so people will buy it. If they had been honest then I would not have bought the items. I see that as a con, how else can you describe it?
Like I said, this has happened several times in the past and I have got to the position now where I am unlikely again to buy low priced items using PayPal as it's just not worth it.
Finally, although I have had problems with items on ebay in the past, as I have said several times already, the more recent problems have been on discogs who do not have anywhere where you can file a claim against a seller.0
