o2 Contract Cancellation

Hello all, I am due to end my 24 month contract with o2 on 26/09/2012.

I was just wondering do I need to write to them to declare that I will not be taking out another one as I do not want to have to change number?

You have got hold of the wrong end of the stick. All that happened is you are coming to the end of your miminum term, NOT your contract. This will continue until YOU tell them you want to leave and give 30 days notice.

When the time comes to perhaps change to a different network, you can request a PAC number to move your mobile number to a different network - but as it stands, you are now on a standard contract with a mone month notice of termination.

If you tell them on 26 August you want to leave, you can go elsewhere as your notice period will finish at the same time as your minimum term.

It doesn't have necessarily to be the 26th of August as the notice has to be given "at least 30 days" before the date you want the contract to be cancelled.

Also, "tell them" is not what the T&C say:
Any other type of notice related to this Agreement must be in writing and delivered by email, by hand or sent by pre-paid post, to us at the address on your bill,
EDIT: I seem to have been wrong about telling: :o
If you want to end the Agreement for any of the reasons described in paragraph 8.2 or 8.4, you must call customer service and give us 30 days’ notice (“Notice”).
"In writing" refers to "any other type of notice"

As has been said, the minimum term ends on 26/9, it then converts to a rolling one month term.

If you wanted to keep your number but change networks, you can do that, what you ask them for is a Port Authorisation Code or PAC which you give to the new provider, do not mention cancellation as the number has to be 'live' when it is transferred.

Once the transfer has been carried out the contract will come to an end automatically and you will receive a final bill.

  • Thanks for the replies guys, I'll write to them in August then and give them notice of not wanting to renew my contract.

I'm in the same situation. 24 month contract 'ends' on the 16th. Chatted online today (as I couldn't get through on the phone) and finally got the PAC. I have 4 weeks to use it if I choose. Just worried about getting stung for not giving notice/early termination etc.

Don't intend to swap until after the 16th but is there a better/cheaper/safer way to do this? The deal they offered was a 12 month contract which I could get better for a bit cheaper, no contract elsewhere so can see no point in staying but only save 50p a month so do not want to end up out of pocket by moving but the data deal is much better elsewhere.

Hope that makes some sense to somebody.

    Hi.

I called up O2 a few days ago, my 24 month contract came to an end I said I was thinking about leaving.

(I had been paying £35/month for an iPhone 4. I got 600ish minutes/month and unlimited texts; 500MB data)

The lady enticed me to stay by saying that for £15/month I could get the same stuff (cheaper cos I would no longer be subsidising the handset price) .

I mentioned that I will almost certainly get the next generation iPhone when it is announced, after Sep 2012. She said that I would be able to do that , no problem.

It occurs to me that I may now be locked into o2. (What if 3 offer a better deal?)

According to my o2 online, this is the tarrif I am now on:
    O2 simplicity 600 12 month
    Contract length: 12 months
    Price: £15.50 per month
    Key features: 600 any-network mins, 300 O2 to O2 mins, unlimited texts
Contract renewal date: 20 August 2013
Data: The All Rounder for iPhone - 500MB (costs £6/month, cancelled out by a £6 "loyalty bonus") so I suppose I'm getting that for free.

This has alarmed me because I don't want to locked into o2 for another year, necessarily.

have I been tricked or mislead? (even if it's my fault for not listening properly to everything she said)

How can I reverse this, please?

I'd be grateful for your thoughts. (I also wonder if she offerend me a better than usual deal because I said I was thinking of leaving)

I think they will be happy to upgrade you to a longer and much more expensive contract with a new iPhone.

Also, IIRC, O2 give you 7 working days to cancel your recent 'upgrade' and to get back to the old tariff.

Not tricked. Not misled. Possibly mis-bought.

You most certainly can get the new Iphone to attach to your sim-only contract in due course. But you will have to buy it outright.

Or, as Grumbler says, convert your contract to a 24 month one at a much more expensive monthly cost.

But, unless you are within your 7 day cooling off period on your sim-only, then you are with O2 for a further 12 months at least.

The one thing that the current situation does give you is the chance to realise just what you would be paying for the new Iphone, either as a buy outright or extra costs for 24 month contract.

Lastly, the basic O2 simplicity 600 you quote doesn't have any data mentioned. However, the O2 site does have a "special offer" that gives you "free" 500mb data for the first 12 months. see http://shop.o2.co.uk/tariffs/simplicity/12_months?cm_mmc=googleuk-_-O2%20simplicity-_-O2%20Simplicity%20-%20Pure%20New-_-Sitelinks%2012%20Month%20Sim%20Only%20Deals%20Exact&gclid=CNmwq5qiiLICFUbMtAodrWEAUw

Did your O2 sales person add that to your contract? If not, you could face a huge bill. Best check - quickly!!!!
  • To answer your question about data, I was given a "loyalty discount" at minus £6/month (this cancels out the data Bolt On)
  • Phew, they cancelled it. It will take 24 hours.

I'm glad I checked online at o2.co.uk to see that it's actually a 12 month contract. And thanks to you guys for urging me to do it immediately!

So, I'll call them in two days time (once the cool-off cancellation is complete - it takes 24 hours), and ask about being put on a 30-day contract. What's a reasonable price to pay? (I see the tarriffs listed on their website but wondered if I could negotiate a bit extra out of them?)

COnsidering I now own the handset (my iPhone 4) I would actually be prepared to shop around for a better value deal.
