    Have just tried tapping F12 again and have boot menu but no idea what to do from here!

    Select your DVD drive from the list; it should boot from whatever is in it.

    3) SATA HDD: WDC WD1600BEVT-22ZCTO- (PM)
    7) PCI BEV: Realtek Boot Agent

    DVD drive? There isn't a DVD in there?

    That'll be why it's not in the list. On the bright side we now know your HDD is still showing signs of life.
