    Before taking the drive out try the recovery DVD as it may have a repair mode.

    It could just be the bootloader that has been damaged which would also result in an OS not found message.
    Interests: PCs. servers, networks, mobiles and music (esp. trance)

    I've done this but can't get past the initial black screens, DVD won't load/function but thanks anyway.

    Try tapping [F12] immediately after you switch it on.
