Indeed, for a charity to have more cash sat in the bank than they spent on charitable causes does raise a few questions about the intentions of said charity.
Well do you know the future plans for the MSE Charity? In 2010 they spent £170k compared to £43 income (net loss £127k)
There expenditure over the last 3 years varies significantly.. for all you know they have a big project in the pipeline for 2012 for which the £173k in the bank covers this and still leaves a 'reserve' for the charity.0 -
Good luck to him!
His private wealth is none of my business.I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

I've been toying with a few domain names. Could have a site with working forum up and running within a couple of hours.
I foresee this site going the way of Friends Reunited. Gets bought for a large sum, all the users disappear, site gets off-loaded for a pittance.Never Knowingly Understood.

Martin has helped 1000's of people on this site, and off,and not one person, bemoaning his good fortune, would turn down such an offer. It's just jealousy. In this country you are not allowed to do well financially, in any sector, again jealousy. Well done that man you worked for it, so you deserve your good fortune.0

It is what will become of the site that worries the users. Moneysupermaket may do what ITV did when they bought FR. They left the core of the site as-is, but added a few new features like 'Genes reunited'.
If the new owners of this site just leave it running as it is now, but add stuff like improved search facilities, then all will be well.
If they start fiddling and removing anti-MS posts and links to non-MS approved sites (or those that do not 'pay-per-click), then they will lose a load of users and the site will become worthless.Never Knowingly Understood.

Ben and Jerrys sold out.
Johny Cash sold out
Martins no different to anyone else.
I still listen to Johny C and eat plenty of Ben and Jerrys.

Martin saw a niche in the market and produced a site tailored for that market. I'm pleased for him that he's been able to capitalise on this for his benefit. However, I suspect it will turn out to be a loss for the rest of us.0

Am I right in thinking that Genes reunited came before the sell off to ITV?0 -

Oh for heavens sake doesnt anyone read previous posts - no-one is jealous of Martin, most of us wish him well - it's just some don't want to be here any more if he's not here or working for someone else, it's not the same! I don't want 'advice' from these huge multi-national insurance overchargers!! I had a look at labour party uk debate forum today and liked cos i'm interested in co-ops and fair trade - i dont know if they discuss any consumer stuff but i didnt see any ads! If i had time free from madly pedalling to keep family afloat I'd have a proper look. Also like the .gov debt advice site and CAB.0 -

Selling out is forgiveable when you produce Phish Food... sadly insurance doesn't taste chocolatey or marshmallowy.
Personally I think he's shot his reputation fairly heavily in the foot with how publicised the deal's become - people are going to have mental images of him wrestling with and surfing on a large inflatable crocodile when he does his telly stuff, and he's sold the impartiality of his advice. Of course - I doubt he gives a stuff about that right now when having large amounts of wonga dangled in front of his nose.
As for the site - I'll post on it a forum if it interests me - if it becomes more and more ad-ridden or heavily censored I'll be off, but I HAVE unsubscribed from the email because the last thing I want is more flipping price comparison site spam email (the flipping meerkats are bad enough sending me daily invites to compare car/house/pet insurance).Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0
