I like the little recipe books containing things from the Good Food Magazine. 101 Cheap Eats is Good, as is 101 One-Pot Dishes. I also like 101 Simple Suppers. The recipes are easy to follow - always three steps (although sometimes a "step" contains several instructions) and the books don't take up too much room either. We had a lovely Mediterranean Shepherd's Pie for tea tonight made with turkey mince, a couple of rashers of bacon and pesto and it was yummy. Last night we had salmon and potato grill (using a tin of salmon so quite cheap).
These books would make a great stocking filler! Much cheaper at less than a fiver than something from a celebrity chef! (And no I don't work for Good Food Magazine, I just like the books.)0 -

Thank you but I don't think it is her, thriftlady. I have now spent far too much time looking at Shirley's blog and searching out her books to read reviews! :rotfl:"all endings are also beginnings. We just don't know it at the time..."0 -

While channel hopping last week I saw a five minute article with a lady that uses up all her food leftovers and had written a book. I'm sure she was in her 80's and has always used everything up - making something out of not much!
Does anyone have a clue who I'm talking about or what her book is called?
TIA
Edit: Just remembered it was on that Sunday morning programme on BBC1 with Colin Jackson presenting......
Was it The Green Granny (I think she's called Barbara Walmsley) that you saw? I caught a snatch of a prog on Sunday morning where they said she would be on later but I had to go out and missed the rest of it! If it is the Green Granny, there are some clips of her on youtube....she makes a bread pudding in one of them!0 -
Hi,
hope someone can help me, please? I'm after a recipe book with lots of easy and cheap (mainly) recipes. I can remember someone mentioning about one on here before but cannot remember what the book was called. Any suggestions? I think it's quite an old book as the writer was saying that their parents have used it a lot. I just need a bit of an inspiration as getting fed up with cooking the same meals but finances dont allow me to cook fancy meals.
Many thanks for your help0 -
There are quite a few that fit the bill, but is it possible you mean " The Paupers Cookbook " by Jocasta Innes ? It gets mentioned on here quite a lot. First published early 70's as I recall ( too lazy to go down to kitchen and look at my copy ! ) Best bet is to scour charity shops for a couple or check out eBay." Hi,
yes, thanks, I think that's the book that i'm after - the title sounds very familiar. I'll have a look on Ebay and going into town tomorrow, so will nose round the charity shops.0 -

It's actually not quite the same book though, it's a mix of the 1970's original and a later edition. I still think its worth hunting out a 2nd hand copy of the original via charity shops/jumble/car boot etc." Baggy, and a bit loose at the seams.. "~ November 8th 2008. Now totally DEBT FREE !~0
