I've never heard of this either! I would check what specific problem it will cause. Is it a dear 'tooth coloured' or 'invisible' brace? This would become very visible if it stained.

As for the pain bit - everybody has different pain thresholds. What is no problem for one person, can be absolute agony for another!!

And different areas of the body can be different as well.

Someone with a high pain threshold in the mouth can be screaming like mad with a splinter in the finger!!
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

This is a really reassuring post mto, I've been toying with the idea of getting braces for a few years now but they seemed too expensive and I was concerned about the pain (as an adult with a lot of straightening to be done!).

Thanks for the edit on the end ;)

Toothsmith ... Its a "tooth coloured" brace, and i was told the wire thingys (sorry don't know the correct name but they're not actually wire, they look like nylon) would be stained by curry and tomato paste.

Cazzdevil ... I've been putting this off since i was 18 (now in my 40s) as i needed to have 4 teeth removed. I had booked for extractions several times and always chickened out on the day. I finally decided to go ahead and I dont know why i had got myself worked up all the other times - they were painless and done in less than 5 mins :T. Of course because i put it off, i am now having to have it done privately whereas all those years ago it would have been on the NHS.

    ETA: are they called ligatures?

Right - yes then - the curries and other strongly coloured stuff will discolour it and ruin the 'invisibility'.

That's why the other brace wearers (and me) hadn't come across it before!!

It probably is the turmeric that will cause the trouble, but it would be an expensive curry if any of the other spices did it!!

I would just go cold turkey for the treatment duration.

Think how much you'll enjoy your first one afterwards!!!

You're obviously having a laugh :p:D:D. Go without curry for 2 years  . I'll have to make my own minus the turmeric, and hope the cumin and coriander don't stain. Probably have to give the curry powder a miss too :cry:
  • If you have clear powerchains as I have they will stain pretty badly if you eat curry but I have not had any problems with tomatoe based dishes.

Its really bad as some of my powerchains are over my front teeth and they go a horrible bright yellow colour. Plus I LOVE curry so I make sure I stay away from it as long as possible after new powerchains are fitted and have loads before they get changed!

If you have ceramic brackets they might stain in the same way but I am not sure as mine are stainless steel. Oh and if its the ligs (plastic bits that hold the archwire onto the brackets) that you worry may stain, I can recommend the bright pink and grey as colours that don't go a horrible colour after curry.

I need a curry now!! (not allowing myself to yet as I only got new PCs on Monday) :(

Well I decided two years was too long to wait, so I made myself a curry (minus turmeric) tonight !!! And as i'm breaking-in my brace i just made a dhal with rice - nice and soft - mmmmm.
  • If I was told to go without a curry for two years I would put one in the blender and suck it through a straw so it wouldn't touch the braces. I love my curries. They did tell me to avoid dark chocolate even with silver braces, but I didn't like dark chocolate anyway.

I am told that there are "teeth trips" to Poland for this kind of thing. Sorry but I have no personal knowledge, but a google of polish dentist and braces might give the necessary information.

    Best of luck.
